Shirley Marie Zaun, 78, of Fargo, died surrounded by her family, on Sunday, July 20, 2008 in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. She died after a courageous 19 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Shirley was born on April 4, 1930 to George and Waunita (Madden) Mellum in Ypsilanti, ND, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1948 and attended Valley City Teachers? College. She taught in Rugby, Minot and Grand Forks. She was a wonderful teacher and considered herself a teacher throughout her life. On June 27, 1959 she married Jerry Zaun in St. James Basilica in Jamestown. They lived in Grand Forks for one year and then moved to Fargo in 1960, where they have lived since. Shirley dedicated her life to her family.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jerry of Fargo; children, Barb (Al) Nelson of Fargo, Doug (Emily) Zaun of Duluth, MN, Pat (Mihoko) Zaun of Tokyo, Japan, Kathy (Bob) Melander of Fargo; sisters, Beu (Linus) Hoffart of Jamestown, Donna Schlender of Rogers, MN, Dorie (Paul) Orr of East Grand Forks, MN, Marlie Mellum of Bismarck, ND, Shari (Ted) Johnson of Bismarck, ND, and sister-in-law Leslie (Mellum) Flyr of Vancouver, WA. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, who were the delight of her life, Kate, Amanda and Rachel Nelson, Gabe and Eli Zaun, Sam and Ben Zaun, and Matthew and Carly Melander. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Matt on November 4, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Waunita and by her brother, Doug.
She will be remembered for her sense of humor, her strong will to live, and her loving hugs and words of wisdom.
Memorials are preferred to the Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Visitation: Thursday, July 24 from 5-7 pm at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo
and one hour prior to Mass at the church on Friday.
Prayer Service: Thursday at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Funeral Mass: Friday, July 25 at 10:00 am at Church of the Nativity, Fargo.
Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
