Slavko Vasiljevic

Slavko Vasiljevic, 97, Fargo, ND died Monday, May 12, 2014 in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Slavko was born on November 3, 1916 in Yugoslavia. He finished schooling and entered the Belgrade Military Academy, graduating in 1938 as a Second Lieutenant.

Slavko fought in World War Two against Germany and was taken prisoner in 1941 and held until the end of the war in 1945. He spent the next three years in Austria as a displaced person, where he met his wife, Elfrieda. They married on July 12, 1948 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 and they have lived in Fargo since then. Slavko worked for M&H Gas in Fargo and Moorhead, Rothrock Awning, Midwest Supply and in Plumbing until 1968 when he started at the Cereal Science Deaprtment at NDSU until his retirement in 1984.

Slavko was active in the Disabled American Veterans and was State Department Commander in 1972-73 and held all Local chapter offices. He was President of the International War Veterans Alliance in 1990-91. Slavko was a charter member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and was State Commander from 1982-to 1985 and was Commander of the Dakota Plains and Dakota Golden Prairie Chapters. Slavko was President of the ND State Employees in 1975-1976 and was employee of the year 1973-74. Slavko enjoyed his retirement and was a volunteer at the Fargo Veterans Hospital and had over 5000 hours. He was a member of the Golden K. Kiwanis of Fargo. He was a life member of these organizations.
