Obituary

Vernon Haugstad, age 88, of Hillsboro, formerly of rural Cummings, ND, died on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Vernon was born on October 13, 1926, on the family farm near Cummings, ND, the son of Albert and Mabel (Amundson) Haugstad. He grew up in this area and attended country school. Vernon was united in marriage to Mavis Knutson on December 28, 1948 in Nielsville, MN. They made their home and worked for area farmers. Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1952 until 1954. Following his discharge he returned to North Dakota. Vernon and Mavis moved to Silver Bay, MN in 1956 and he began working for the Reserve Mining Company for 31 years. He also owned and operated a shoe repair business for all of those years spent in Silver Bay. After retirement, they moved back to North Dakota to the farmstead that his grandfather homesteaded in 1881, and spent 27 wonderful years enjoying farm life. Vernon was a longtime faithful member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Vernon is survived his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Mavis; his son, Russell (Debbie) Haugstad of Beulah, ND; his daughter, Jody (Jack) Culhane of Marathon, WI; four grandchildren – Brooke Haugstad of Beulah; Brian (Courtney) Haugstad of Bismarck, ND; Lindsey (Aaron) Peterson of Dallas, TX; and Dustin (Liz) Culhane of Charlotte, NC; and two very special great grandchildren, Ellie and Easton Haugstad. Also surviving are his siblings – Edgar (Lorraine) Haugstad and Leatrice Dell; and sister-in-law, Audrey Haugstad all of Moorhead, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert and James; and his brother-in-law, Oscar Dell.

    Chandler ArizonaRuss,
I’m sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. I remember him well as a friend of my Dad’s when they worked together at Reserve Mining for so many years. Like a lot of people in Silver Bay, he was a down to earth person and genuinely a very nice guy. It was good to see that he enjoyed such a long and happy retirement. My sympathy to you and your family at this trying time.
    Best regards,
    Don Dumais
