Wilfred "Willie" Schmidt

Wilfred J. ?Willie? Schmidt, Fargo, North Dakota, formerly of Dickey, North Dakota, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2005, at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo at the age of 73. Wilfred was born on November 25, 1931, the son on Lawrence and Bardina (Richter) Schmidt in rural Emmons County, North Dakota. He moved with his family to the Dickey area in 1935, to a family farm. He grew up in this area and received his education. Wilfred proudly served his country first in the National Guard and then in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he returned to North Dakota. He was united in marriage to Florence A. Steffes on October 21, 1952, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in LaMoure, North Dakota. They made their home on the family farm near Dickey where they farmed and raised their family. In 1994, Wilfred and Florence moved to West Fargo, North Dakota, where they made their home until March of 2003, when they moved to Riverview Place. Wilfred was an active member of the Assumption Parish in Dickey, later at Blessed Sacrement Church in West Fargo, and finally at Riverview Place in Fargo. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus serving as a 4th Degree Knight. He also played drums in a Polka Band for over 40 years where he was the drummer (with very good rhythm). Wilfred also served his community for over 20 years on the Social Service Board as well as on the ASCS Board. He also served on the Board of Regents at University of Mary in Bismarck. Wilfred is survived by his loving wife, Florence of Fargo; his son, Michael of West Fargo; his daughters, MaryAnne (Darwin) Bitz of Dickey; and Rosemarie (Tom) Haegele of Aberdeen, South Dakota; grandchildren, Dallon and Amanda Bitz; and step grandchildren, Karli and Kindra Haegele. He is also survived by his sisters, Bernadine Lenichek of El Cajon, California; and Lorraine (John) Sadowski of Thousand Oaks, California; and his sister in law, Sandra Schmidt of Dickey. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Edwin.
