Paul Juell

Dr. Paul L Juell, 62, of Fargo, ND died at Meritcare on Saturday, December 29, 2007. Paul was born on August 26, 1945 the son of Lawrence and Vivian Juell in Lusk, WY. He attended school in Glasglow, MT and Riverdale, ND. In 1968, he graduated from NDSU with a degree in Physics. He worked as a student programmer at the NDSU Computer Center and after graduation continued as a systems programmer/instructor. In 1971, he married Carolyn Jacobson at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, MN. They moved to Troy, NY where he graduated with MS degree from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in 1972. He worked for Wang Laboratories in Tewksbury, MA designing the operating system and processor interface for the VS computers. In 1975, they moved to Columbus Ohio while he attended Ohio State University. He began teaching Computer Science at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY in 1980. He graduated with a PhD from Ohio State University in 1981. He returned to NDSU to teach in Computer Science Department in 1982. His teaching and research interests were Artificial Intelligence, Systems, and Technology Based Teaching. He was advisor for the NDSU Student Chapter of ACM and honorary member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon. He served as Associate Chair 2005-2007. His research interests lead to travel to China in 1984 as part of People to People delegation, Egypt in 2004 for a Fulbright Exchange with the University of Cairo where he coordinated the establishment video conferencing with NDSU, and invited presentations for conferences in Italy and Morocco. Paul was dedicated to his teaching and served as major graduate advisor to over one hundred twenty seven MS and PhD students. He and his wife were also foster parents for nineteen years with the Lutheran Social Services Unaccompanied Minors Program. In December 2007, they received the Advocate Award from Region V Children?s Services Committee. He also found time to pursue his passion for flying in the Neo Flying Club plane. He said he felt ?free? while flying. Paul is survived by his wife , Carolyn, foster sons, Thao Le (Brooklyn Park), Cuong Pham (St. Cloud), Bolo Deng (Fargo) and Charlie Nguyen (Charlotte, N.C.), five foster grandchildren, and twelve nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Kristin, brother, Harold and foster brother, Marvin Uphaus. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 5 at 1 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, Fargo. Arrangements are through Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
