Dean Thies

Dean Thies, 84, passed away at his home in Alamo, TX on October 5, 2019. Dean was born to Henry Thies and Loretta Glasser Thies on October 20, 1934 in Lake Andes, South Dakota. In 1937, their family moved to the Fargo-Moorhead area. Dean attended West Fargo schools and graduated in 1952. He married June Montplaisir in 1954 and together they had five children. Dean worked for Armour & Co. in West Fargo as a livestock buyer until 1959. He would then go on to sell insurance for Pioneer Mutual Life, becoming an officer in the Fargo location until his retirement in 1995. In 1990, Dean married Katy Barber and four years later they moved full-time to their lake home on Turtle Lake. He and Katy headed south to enjoy retirement at the Alamo County Club in Alamo, Texas in 2005. They both enjoyed the A.C.C. community and the beautiful view of Hole #4 from their patio. Dean was an avid golfer, a loyal Bison fan, and always found time to be involved in many clubs and associations. He was a longtime member at Edgewood, having been a past president of the Edgewood Men's Golf Club. He was also involved with the Lions for over 30 years and in 1985 was named Lion of the Year for the Fargo Chapter. Dean served in the Air National Guard from 1953-1959. Throughout his life, he enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing, but most importantly spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Katy Thies of Alamo, TX; his children - Jennifer (Joe) Carney, Fargo, ND; Rick Thies, St. Louis Park, MN; Mike (Janet) Thies, Deep Haven, MN; Kathy Gessler, Phoenix, AZ; Todd (Karrie) Thies, St. Paul, MN; siblings - Dale (Diane) Thies, Fargo, ND; Gale (Larry) Keane, Kennewick, WA; Tom (Marianne) Thies, Jefferson, MO; Calvin Thies, Fargo, ND; brother-in-law, Joe Jacobson, West Fargo, ND; sister-in-law, Linda Thies, West Fargo, ND; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family. Dean is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Bill Thies; and a sister, Phyllis Jacobson.
