Milfred (Fred) Sidney Smith, 83, passed away on Sunday, June 27th, 2021 at Bethany Retirement Living in Fargo, ND. Milfred was born on December 8, 1937 to Morris and Signe (Gunderson) Smith in Hillsboro, ND. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1956. After high school he proudly served in the US Air Force and Army National Guard. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion. On September 10, 1966, he was united in marriage to Caroline Mae Olsen of Edmore, ND at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Hillsboro, ND. Milfred is survived by his daughter Shyla (Kenneth) Hoffart of Gladstone, ND; son Paul Smith of Fargo, ND; grandchildren Shanna Lewis of Billings, MT, Rodney Marquardt of San Antonio, TX, Marcus Marquardt- US Navy, Dominic Hoffart of Glendive, MT, Tabatha (Cole) Stafford of Richardton, ND; a great-grandson Breyson Hoffart; Sister Inez (Russell) Kappes of Greenbush, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Milfred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Caroline, his brother Palmer, and his sister Hazel Riepe. Fred will be greatly missed and will be remembered by his sense of humor and his love for his family. He enjoyed reading and watching sports, but his passion was working on gathering information on his Family Tree. Fred’s family would like to thank the Hospice of the Red River Valley and staff at Bethany on 42nd for their loving care of him. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, July 24th, 2021 at Salem Cemetery near Nielsville, MN. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer any memorials go to Hospice of the Red River Valley or The American Cancer Society.
