Lillian Thompson passed away on April 24, 2024, at the Hillsboro Medical Center at the age of 102, surrounded by her daughters and the caring medical staff.
Lillian Murriel Oie Thompson was born on January 19, 1922, in rural Portland delivered by her father on the family farm. She was baptized March 5th at the Bang Lutheran Church and attended Gran and Aurdal Lutheran Churches growing up. Her school years were in a one room schoolhouse in rural Steel County where she graduated of 7th grade.
She married Kenneth Thompson on January 27, 1947, in the family home with her sister, Bertha and Kenneth’s brother, Chester as their attendants. Together they worked for area farmers before moving to their farmstead near Cummings in 1959 where they lived until retiring in 1980. They moved onto their country home near Aal Church for 20 years prior to moving into Hillsboro in Sept of 2001. Kenneth passed away a year later in May of 2002 and Lillian continued to make her home there for the next 20+ years.
Lillian was a member of the Norway Lutheran Church until it closed its doors, and she joined her new church family @ Our Saviors Lutheran. She was active in WELCA; the Senior Citizen group, Homemakers and the church quilting group. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking, and traveling. She is well remembered for her cinnamon rolls, donuts, apple pies and lefse. Her greatest joy was the time spent with her family and friends.
Lillian ingrained the love of her family’s deep Norwegian traditions and those roots that tied the generations together. A dream was realized when Lillian travel to Norway in 2004 with her daughters Kathy and Linda. There she met with cousins and visited the birth homes of her mother and grandmother. That trip inspired the three of them to pursue Norge Familie, the family hobby creating Scandinavian arts and crafts.
Lillian is survived by her daughters, Kathryn (John) Alvord of Tacoma, WA, and Linda (Randy) Smith of Boulder, CO. Her grandchildren Gordon (Amy) Alvord of Maple Valley, WA, and Ben (Theresa) Thompson of Bourne, TX. 4 great grandchildren include Scott and Ryan Alvord and Barrett and Thea Thompson. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marlene Oie, Cummings, ND as well as nephews, nieces, and extended relatives.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Lars & Marie Oie; and her husband Kenneth; sister, Bertha Thompson; brothers Leonard, Albert & Norman Oie and her granddaughter, Meredith Alvord.
