Lloyd was born on April 11, 1928, to Dick and Dorothy (Nelson) Heyen at home in Richland County, North Dakota. He grew up on a farm outside Colfax, ND along with 5 brothers, Darrell, James, Leonard, Dick, and Donald, and a twin sister, Arlene. Lloyd and his twin were nicknamed Sonny & Sis.
Lloyd served in the Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and continued with the Army Reserves for another 5 years. He was an active member of the VFW as well as the American Legion.

He moved to Pelican Rapids where the couple lived until her death on December 7, 2012.
Lloyd and Astrid took great pride in their garden, flowers, and birdhouses they built to put around their home. One of Lloyd’s favorite activities was fishing. His go-to spot was on Pelican River right next to the Big Pelican, however, he also visited many of the lakes surrounding the city. Lloyd enjoyed teaching several of his children and grandchildren how to fish. He was a volunteer for the Senior Citizen Center, Pelican Valley Nursing Home, and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Lloyd had many jobs throughout his life including delivering milk with his father and grandfather, carpentry, well drilling, finally retiring from the Pelican Rapids Turkey Plant.
Above all else, Lloyd believed in family, only missing one family reunion while serving in the army.
