Thomas Beaks, 62, died from pneumonia complicated by COPD and emphysema, on October 22, 2024, after six weeks in Vibra Hospital at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, N.D. Tom is remembered for his love of animals (especially his cat), Dr. Pepper, video games, and spending time with friends and family.

Tom and his twin brother Tony were born September 4, 1962. As newborns, the twins were placed into foster care with Henry and Martha Heth while awaiting adoption. The Heth children — teenagers Nadine and Kaylynn and 5-year-old Trent — welcomed them. The older Heth children, Valora and Veriena, were married and had children close to the ages of the twins.

Sadly, Tony was just a few months old when he died from sudden infant death syndrome. Tom remained in his foster home where he was loved and cared for by the Heth family.

As a small child, Tom was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. At age four he underwent major surgery to treat symptoms of his disability, which put him in a body cast from his toes to his chest. Tom was a brave and happy child and never complained. Tom had many playmates growing up, including his older brother Trent and his nephews and nieces. Throughout his school years he made several lasting friendships.

In adulthood, Tom ventured out on his own and sometimes experienced challenges with the choices he made. He was introduced to Community Living Services where Steve and Lisa – who worked with Tom for many years – helped him overcome difficulties.

More recently, Tom’s tribal affiliation gave him the resources to have a specially-equipped home built. He was proud of his home, which gave him the freedom to enjoy life watching sports and TV, playing video games, and sharing his livelihood with family and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his twin brother, Tony, his foster parents, Henry and Martha Heth; brothers-in-law, Gary Glandt and Bradley Gibb; and nephew, Wade Glandt. He is survived by his brother, Trent (Mary) Heth; sisters, Valora Glandt, Veriena (Bob) Garver, Nadine (Butch) Myers, and Kaylynn Gibb; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
