Lakota, ND

Fargo, ND
Nancy Lou Kjelgaard completed her physical life with her husband by her side on March 28, 2025, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and Touchmark staff. Also, faith, family, and friends were pillars that supported Nancy on the winding journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
Nancy was born November 15, 1944, in Lakota, North Dakota, the daughter of Tony and Edna Foley. Her youth meant making mud pies in the granary, caring for favorite doll Mary Lou, and spending time with her sister Jacky, who remained close over her lifetime. Good friends in high school were Sheree, Virginia, and Mary Jane. She cleverly labeled the group “Nanc ‘n Sheree, Virg ‘n Mary.”
In 1965, Nancy graduated from Valley City State University with a degree in elementary education. Butch proposed to Nancy on April Fool’s Day in front of Ed’s Popcorn Stand in Valley City. Time proves this was no joke. She and Butch were married on August 11, 1967, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakota, ND. She and her husband Harold “Butch” Kjelgaard spent the first three years of a thirty-five-year teaching career in Mohall, North Dakota. The remainder of her career was spent with the Fargo Public Schools. Nancy’s sense of humor and compassion for the job created friendships with students, fellow teachers/administrators, and parents that remained strong throughout her life. During her teaching career, she and Marlene Hefta owned Variety Tours traveling across the country with the New York City Christmas tour being especially memorable for many.
May 1, 1973, marked the birth of Eric and October 30, 1978, the birth of Chad. Nancy and Butch enjoyed following their participation in music and athletics during their high school years at Fargo South. KJ (Nancy) and Bumpa (Butch) are so proud of the fine men they are.
Upon retirement in 2000, Nancy, Jacky, and friends enjoyed traveling across the USA, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2003 Nancy and Butch spent eighteen years in Arizona first as snowbirds at Sunflower Resort and then as year-round residents in Sun City West. The music shows, the new friendships, the worship services, and the holiday celebrations gave Nancy and Butch much on which to reminisce.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Edna Foley, a daughter at birth, daughter-in-law Andrea, stepdad Reg Connelly, numerous aunts and uncles, memorable brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
Nancy is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years Butch, Eric (Susan) Kjelgaard, Chad (Theresa) Kjelgaard, grandchildren Conner, Gia, Paige, and Ellie, her sister Jacky, plus numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Nancy’s life is planned for May 8 at Touchmark in south Fargo at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Red River Valley or Alzheimer’s research.

I am so sorry to hear of Nancy’s passing. We lived next door to Butch and Nancy for many years. She was a wonderful sweet lady.
Nancy was the best friend and most wonderful sister of my friend Jackie. I met her in early 1990 and over time, each time she came to see Jackie in Portland, or each time I was in Arizona we got together. I remember thinking that the kids in North Dakota that had Nancy for a teacher, or incredibly lucky. Her big heart, her kindness, her gentleness all shined through. I came to consider her my friend too. May flights of angels, see her to her rest.
Condolences to Butch and family. Nancy and kids were wonderful neighbors.Gus Staahl

Nancy was my beloved aunt and I have a lifetime of memories with her. Her kindness was always present and her laughter was truly infectious. She and my mom were the closest as any two sisters could possibly be and her loss leaves a huge hole in our hearts. Uncle Butch has been amazing the last few years in the compassionate care he has given her. I am so glad she is at peace now.
Nancy was a such a special person, she was great friends with my mom, and I know they had so much fun traveling together throughout the years.
She always was so positive and brought joy to everyone that she was around.
Rest in Peace.
My sympathies to Butch and the family. I never got to meet Nancy but as a fellow Cooperstown Lynx graduate I have come to know that he was a loving, loyal and compassionate partner throughout their time together.
Butch know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and for Nancy. Fond memories of our Holiday Inn dinners to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Dick and Mary

Bringing you a hug at a Bison game.
I grew up across the street from Butch and did get to meet Nancy over the years when they would come to visit Cooperstown. I would like to extend our sympathy to Butch and family!
Nancy was a fabulous teacher to our son at Centennial and I will forever be grateful to her for her wisdom, humor and kindness. Whenever I saw her it was a delight to visit with her as she never forgot you and always made you feel special.
My thoughts and prayers to the family. She was a treasure.
She always “lit up a room” while visiting with all of us that knew and loved her. She couldn’t have been more kind and caring. She was so loved by us and all that knew her. There will be a hole in our hearts as we remember her and her loving the family
Butch, we love you and yours and will be prqying for you all in this time of change and loss.
We will pray for all of you as you go through this period of mourning
Love you all.

Butch & Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Nancy’s passing. She was a staple in my childhood – one of the only people in my life to ever call me “Natty” (Butch being the other). May your memories bring you comfort during this difficult time. She will be missed!
Peace be with you, Butch. So many years together. What a beautiful love story.
