Thomas and Hilt, of Fargo, ND and Tucson, AZ, passed away peacefully in Fargo on July 15, 2025. Born in Webster, South Dakota, Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila Hilt, and their three sons: Paul Hilt (children Elise and Jack), Jim Hilt and his husband Derek Brown (son Owen), and Mark Hilt and his wife Elizabeth (children Chloe, Adrianna, Camden, Emmy and Coby).
Tom loved the simple joys of life—especially a well-struck golf shot, a new travel adventure, and dreaming about the backyard swimming pool he never quite got around to building. His quick wit, steady presence, and generous spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
He will be remembered most for the love he gave freely and the pride he took in his family.
At Tom’s request, there will be no long obituary or formal services. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, the family invites donations to The Hospice House at the Sanford Hospital Foundation in Fargo to honor of a life well lived.

My deepest condolences go out to you all. I was proud to call him my father in law. He had the biggest heart and I could just see how much he loved everyone, especially Sheila. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know and love him.
I worked with Tom many years ago at Community First. He was the nicest person to work for! He cared so much for his employees. He was also very funny! Sending my condolences to Sheila and his family. May they find comfort in his memories.
