Dyann Marie Fladland

dyann fladland

June 14, 1963 ~ November 7, 2025

Born in: Sisseton, South Dakota
Resided in: Fargo, North Dakota

Dy passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025 at Vibra Hospital, Fargo due to complications of West Nile Virus. Her loving sisters were at her side.

Dyann was born June 14, 1963 in Sisseton, SD to Gale and Eloise (Anderson) Fladland. She grew up on the family farm outside of Hammer, SD and attended school in New Effington, SD, Class of 1981. Dy was a 1985 graduate of Concordia College Moorhead, MN, and received her Masters of Arts in Education from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN in 2009. She worked as a buyer for Vanity Stores and as a manager at So-Fro Fabrics before finding her passion, teaching, at Fargo Public Schools in 1994.

In May 2004, Dy received the life-changing gift of both a kidney and pancreas transplant. Her years of Type 1 diabetes since childhood were finally over, and the importance of organ donation became clear to all who knew her.

Dy had a beautiful voice and sang at many weddings. She was extremely creative, a voracious reader, and had a great eye for home and garden design. Dy was skilled at communicating, building relationships, and using her creativity to solve problems. She related to the entire spectrum of ages and taught us all how to live a full, joyful, purpose-filled life. Collecting local art and capturing images of clouds were passions, but everyone who knew her saw clearly that her most special love was reserved for the cats she nurtured over the years.

Dy was preceded in death by her parents, brother Mark, nephew Charles, and infant daughter Katy. Survived by sisters, Debra (David) Siegel, Dawn (Duane) Sattler, Mary Jo “Mj” (Blake) Derhak, sister-in-law Dianne Fladland and their families, plus a multitude of friends and former students.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sanford and Vibra Hospitals for the loving care received over the past seven weeks, and HUGE hugs to her many friends who visited and sent their love.

Dy didn’t want a funeral. Instead, she requests that friends gather in their small groups, to tell stories, laugh, hug, and, in her words, “eat cake!”

Memorials can be made to Cats Cradle Fargo, ND; Lifesource, Minneapolis, MN; Alzheimer’s Association, Fargo, ND; Nidaros Cemetery, Hammer SD; Great Plains Food Bank for the Fargo Public Schools Backpack Program.

  9. Dear Dy was one of the first students who I taught all four years at Concordia. She was the inquisitive, optimistic and industrious student every teacher dreams of. It’s been a joy to follow her along her career path, where her love for people often trumped the subject matter or situation. I can’t recall her without a smile, and her joy for life was ever-apparent. We’ve stayed in touch, and I know that her legacy lives on in her students. Condolences to her family. ❤️🙏🏻

  16. Dyann Fladland (Ms. Fladland as I always knew you as) you were one of the kindest, best people I ever had the privilege of knowing. Even years after I was your Seventh Grade health student, you maintained a meaningful digital connection with me on Facebook where you were there for me when I felt down, you wished me a “Happy Birthday” on my timeline every year. You always made sure to say “Hi” if you ran into me at Hornbacher’s. If you do know, I had been concerned by your absence on Facebook before the tragic news was broken on your FB page by your sister about the Wedt Nile disease, I had been wondering, and felt concerned for you before knowing that. I miss you very much.

  17. She’s not gone….shell never be gone. All you have to do is Look up into a beautiful sky filled with gorgeous clouds and that will be Dy looking down at you with a smile… you are a beautiful angel…keep watch over us sweet Dy.
P.S. I’ll keep buying some sage green fabrics and think of you ❤️

  18. What a wonderful lady best health teacher I ever had and got to be her server 10 years later at Randy’s diner. So full of life and smiles. I’m drinking a Diet Coke for her tonight. Rest easy beautiful

  19. Dy,
You brought a lot of laughter and smiles to my life over the years of teaching together. We continued our friendship after you retired through FB and am glad for that.
I will always remember your chili feed at BF right before your transplant.
What a courageous life you have led. One would have never known your struggles.
I will always remember you with a smile. Rest in peace, my friend.

  20. I am so sorry to read that Dy has passed away. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

  21. I’m so sad to hear of Dyann’s passing . We always had lots of laughs when she would come into the salon . I loved her spunky attitude and stories of experiences in her life .

  22. Vic and I both knew Dy. Vic from Concordia and I met her through other teacher friends. Dy loved to be silly and she was crafty and liked to bake. We had so much in common and was just so much fun! The last time I saw Dy we talked about if we believed in a higher power. I think Dy was letting me know she did and that she was going to be okay. Dy will be missed by so many people! Fly high faithful servant and don’t forget to send cardinals and butterflies to remind us that you are still here!
    Missy and Vic

  23. As her younger sister I cannot even express how much our family appreciates the posts in this guestbook and on social media. Thank you so much for sharing. Knowing how loved Dy was makes the sorrow of losing her more bearable.
    Love and light, Mj

  24. Dy was my backyard neighbor from ages 4-13. She had the most beautiful garden and always allowed my friend and I to play fairies there. We would make her “perfume” with her flowers she’d let us pick. When I was very little, I was convinced Dy was a fairy. I would stay up late and spy out my back window to see if her wings came out at night. She would have me over to bake and garden while always having kitties to play with and wisdom to share. I’m happy I was able to keep in touch with her through the years. She was a wonderful and bright human, I will miss her greatly.
