Richard Johnson passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Kinder Care in West Fargo, ND.

Richard “Dick” Neal Johnson was born on November 29, 1940, to Enar and Gladys (Hedin) Johnson in Malung, MN. He attended public school in Roseau, MN, and later technical school in Thief River Falls, MN, where he earned a degree in engineering.

Dick married Pat Halvorson on June 24, 1961, in Roseau. They made their home in Carrington, ND, where Dick began his career with Northwestern Bell. Throughout his career, Pat and Dick lived in Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Grafton, and eventually Fargo,ND, where they have resided since 1975. Dick worked for Northwestern Bell for 35 years before retiring in 1995.

Dick enjoyed spending time at the Johnson Family Tree Farm near Roseau, woodcarving, and camping. He and Pat also enjoyed wintering in Benson, AZ. He cherished time with family and friends and had a remarkable ability to fix just about anything—often with parts he had on-hand. He was always ready with a cup of coffee, prepared to make his specialty Swedish pancakes, and could often be found at The Shack enjoying a meal. Together with Pat, he was a role model for what every parent should strive to be.

Dick was a member of the Jaycees, the Masonic Temple, the El Zagal Shrine Escort Patrol, the HAM Radio Club, and the Red River Valley Woodcarvers.

Dick is survived by his wife, Pat Johnson of Fargo, ND, children, Wade (Bryce) Johnson of Fargo, ND; Vickie (Dave) Piepkorn of Fargo; and Brett (Jennifer) Johnson of Grand Forks, ND; his sister, Kay Schell of Baudette, MN; his sister-in-law Fran (Kotta) Johnson; his brother- and sister-in-law, David and Katherine (Halvorson) Grahn; and his sister-in-law, Connie (Thompson) Halvorson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jenna Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Izzy Johnson, Alex Piepkorn, Will Piepkorn, Amanda (Alex) Althoff, and Kaylie Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Sophia, Dutton, and Lincoln Althoff; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Enar and Gladys Johnson; his brother, Floyd Johnson; his brother-in-law, George Schell; his in-laws, Severin and Florence Halvorson; his brothers-in-law, Harold and Terry Halvorson; and his sister-in-law, Kathy (McKim) Halvorson.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Kinder Care for their compassion and devotion.
