Raydon Leon Workin, 88, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away on May 15, 2026.
Raydon was born on September 16, 1937, in Mayville, North Dakota, to Ben and Alma (Olstad) Workin. He attended country school for his first four years before continuing his education in Galesburg after the country school closed. Raydon graduated from Galesburg High School in 1955. He continued his education at Concordia College for two years and later attended Moorhead State University, graduating in August 1959.
On June 10, 1960, Raydon married the farmer’s daughter and love of his life, Betty Rostad, at Richland Church near Walcott, North Dakota. Together they built a loving home and raised three sons: Joel, Lowell, and Leon. Raydon and Betty shared a marriage grounded in faith, family, and community, building a life together on the family farm near Walcott where countless memories were made with family and friends.
Education and farming became Raydon’s life’s work. He began his teaching career in Montevideo, Minnesota, during 1957 and 1958. He later taught in Galesburg, North Dakota, from 1961 to 1962 and in Dilworth, Minnesota, from 1962 to 1963. In 1964, Raydon and his family moved to a farm near Walcott, North Dakota, where he added farming alongside his teaching career and taught in Walcott and Kindred, North Dakota, until his retirement in 1992. Over the years, he also spent many seasons coaching high school basketball and appreciated the opportunity to work with young people both in and out of the classroom. Even after retiring, Raydon continued teaching for a time in Guam.
After living on the family farm for many years, Raydon returned to Fargo in 1994. In retirement, he stayed active by working at Fargo Cash Wise beginning in 1996 and later spent time working at the Fargo Post Office.
Raydon enjoyed golfing and treasured the many years he and Betty spent wintering in Arizona. Together they also enjoyed traveling, seeing places such as Norway, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Panama Canal. Above all else, Raydon valued time with family and friends. He took great pride in attending his sons’ and grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts, activities, and in some cases coaching them over the years, supporting and encouraging them every step of the way. In his later years, he especially appreciated the companionship and friendship of Arlys Torgerson.
Raydon is survived by his son Lowell, Fargo, North Dakota; his grandsons, James (Sarah Davis), Fargo, North Dakota, and Matthew (Rylee), rural Walcott, North Dakota, and their son, Iver; his son Leon (Beth), Chaska, Minnesota; their sons, Alexander (Kelsey), Maple Grove, Minnesota, and their children, Milo and Nora; Aaron, Maple Grove, Minnesota; and daughter Kathryn, Burnsville, Minnesota; along with two sisters, Francis Kyllo and Carol Baker; sisters-in-law, Bunny Workin, Marlys Workin, Judi Workin, and Vonnie Rostad; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Workin; their son, Joel Workin; Joel’s partner, Paul Jenkins; Lowell’s wife, Lora Workin; his parents, Ben and Alma Workin; and parents-in-law, Otto and Clara Rostad; brothers, Marlowe Workin, Richard Workin, Arland Workin, and David Workin; sisters, Madelyn Ulland and Arlene Klug; brothers-in-law, Hartman Ulland, Marlin Klug, Bernie Kyllo, Robert Baker, Kenneth Rostad, and John Milo Rostad; sisters-in-law, Avis Workin and Maxine Rostad;
