Harlyn Ray Ault, age 78, of Moorhead, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Catherine’s South in Fargo. He was born on October 10, 1947, in Grafton, North Dakota, to Howard and J. Pearl (Bjornson) Ault.
Harlyn was a dedicated and accomplished individual who graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) with a degree in Accounting. In August 1967, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably during the Vietnam War until 1971. His assignments included a station at Chicksands Air Force Base in Bedford, United Kingdom. On November 10, 1967, Harlyn married Janice Hagen in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the couple made their home in Moorhead.
Harlyn’s professional career included several years at Crystal Sugar, followed by an impressive tenure with the City of Moorhead, where he served faithfully for 34 years before retiring on March 31, 2012. His commitment to his work was paralleled by his gentle and kind demeanor.
In his leisure time, Harlyn sought tranquility through various pursuits. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, tending to his yard, house projects, spoiling his granddogs, and long visits to his daughter in Montana. An avid reader and enthusiastic bridge player, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Above all, Harlyn was a devoted husband and a cherished father.
Harlyn is survived by his beloved wife, Janice Ault of Moorhead, Minnesota; his daughter, Kimberly Ault (partner Brooks Angell); his granddog Bentley; and his siblings: Rodney Ault, Scott Ault, and Angela Moulds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Mary Ann Ault, and his granddog Cooper.

Whenever I visited Moorhead, he and Aunt Janice always made time for me. They would come over and sit around my Grandma Hagen’s table, sharing stories, laughter, and conversation. Those visits are such warm memories for me now.
I also remember visiting Uncle Harlyn at his office with the City of Moorhead. I loved seeing him, although I must admit that having his office connected to the mall made those visits especially exciting for me because I always loved to shop!
Uncle Harlyn had a quiet way of making people feel welcome and cared for. I feel fortunate to have known and loved him, and I will remember him with great affection.
Harlyn was a great City of Moorhead colleague, and I was happy to reconnect with him when he and Jan moved to the Linden where my parents were living. He was good at his occupation and a wonderful friend. Sending wholehearted condolences to Jan and Kimberly.
Kimberly, in my mind’s eye, I can still see a series of photos of you hanging on the wall in your Dad’s office! You were drinking from a well and wearing a red shirt. He was proud of you.
