Nils Martin Buringrud, 102, died August 8, 2026, peacefully at his home in Fargo, ND, of natural causes.
Nils Buringrud was born January 11, 1924, to Nils and Marthe (Berg) Buringrud in Thief River Falls, MN. He graduated from Hillsboro High School. Nils enlisted in the marines in 1944, at 22 years old. He fought in World War II serving aboard an aircraft carrier. Upon his honorable discharge, he was an expert rifleman when the war ended. On December 7, 1947, Nils married Elaine. They lived on a farm near Argusville, ND until moving to Gardner, ND, where they continued to farm. In 1993, they retired from farm life and moved to Fargo, where Nils worked part-time at Fargo South High School assisting in the automotive department and then worked for Goodwill Retail Store part-time picking up donations from residents in Fargo, where, after a few years, he retired completely.
Nils loved his family, and he and Elaine attended many school and church events for their children and grandchildren. Nils loved doing small carpentry work around the house and shed in Fargo. He was active with the Gardner School Board, was president of the Nora Lutheran Church Council, served as a delegate to the NW Minnesota Synod, and was the manager of the Northern Cass Water Board for many years until moving to Fargo. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion.
Nils is survived by his children, Wanda Hoffmann, West Fargo, ND, Marcia Buringrud, Fargo, and Nels Jon Buringrud, West Fargo; his daughters-in-law Mary Buringrud and Eileen Buringrud; eleven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Nils was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; parents, Nils and Marthe Buringrud; siblings, Ole, Ed, Alfred, Einer, Sigrid and Bertha; his daughter, Marilyn Hein; his sons, Terry Buringrud and Mike Buringrud; son-in-law Richard Hoffmann.
