Frank John Metzger passed away Friday, September 18, 2026, at the North Dakota Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Frank was born on August 4, 1948, to Marcus and Della (Fischer) Metzger in Langdon, ND. He enlisted in the Army and served from October of 1967 until May of 1969. He attended basic training at Fort Lewis in Washington, eventually serving in Korea.
Upon returning to the U.S., he reunited with the love of his life, LaRae Fischer, and they were married June 20, 1970, in Langdon. Around 1976, they moved from Langdon to make their home in West Fargo, ND and welcomed their four children: Rob, Jeff, Marcia, and John. Frank’s expertise in meat cutting, a skill he learned on the family farm, led to his career at Hornbacher’s working in their meat department for 40 years.
Frank was a long-time member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, joining in 1976, and a member of the Argusville VFW. He enjoyed bowling, deer hunting, woodworking, and gardening. Above all else, Frank loved his family, especially the joys of being a father and grandfather. He will forever be remembered for his gentle nature and ability to make friends everywhere he went.
Frank is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, LaRae; children, Rob (LuAnn), Crookston, MN, Jeff (Jesse), Phoenix, AZ, Marcia (Dave) Burroughs, Fort Worth, TX, John, Langdon, ND; grandchildren, Noah, Megan, Thomas, Paris, Cade, Lucas, Saul, and Alyx; great-grandchildren, Elleanor and Nomia; brothers, Harvey (Patty), Gary (Liela), and Danny (Laurie); sisters, Joyce (Chuck) Anderson and Patty (Joe) Bata; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Della Metzger.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 25, 2026, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a visitation one hour prior.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Frank. I feel incredibly fortunate that I had the opportunity to get to know him over the last few years when he would come to my clinic.
Frank always gave me a hard time, but he could certainly take it right back. That was one of the things I loved about him. He had a way of making you smile, even when he was giving you a hard time.
Our birthdays were close together, and we had talked about sharing a homemade German chocolate cake someday. I’m so sorry we never got the chance to do that together. I’ll have that cake for you next year, my friend, and I’ll be thinking of you when I do.
Frank, I want you to know that you made an impact on my life. I will miss your humor, your teasing, and seeing you come to clinic. Most of all, I will miss the friendship we built in those little moments over the years.
I’m so grateful I got to know you, and I hope your family knows how special you were to the people whose lives you touched.
I love you, Frank, and I will miss you more than you know. Until we meet again, my friend. ❤️
I was saddened to hear of Frank’s passing. Larae and Frank were such a special and unique couple. Frank had a wonderful personality and was kind to everyone. Your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
