John “Johnnie” William Donovan passed away under the care of HIA Hospice on October 16, 2026, at SMP St. Catherine South.

John was born to William and Alberta (Proctor) Donovan in Lansing, Michigan, on July 18, 1954.

John attended Grafton State School and later moved to Fargo in the 1980s, where he became involved with Community Living Services (CLS). Through his many years with CLS, John built meaningful relationships, participated in his community, and became a valued member of the CLS family. He also worked at Dakota Supply Group for over 25 years, where he contributed to the workplace and built lasting connections with those around him.

John enjoyed staying active and involved in the things that brought him happiness. He loved traveling, especially cruises that allowed him to visit multiple destinations and experience new places. He cherished spending time socializing with fellow residents in his building, enjoying his favorite beverage, coffee, sharing meals, and playing bingo. John also enjoyed attending CLS parties and events, where he could visit with his peers and spend time with others. He was a kind, soft-spoken man who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Those who knew John shared this sentiment and will remember his gentle nature and the kindness he showed to others.

John also had a passion for sports, particularly baseball, and took great joy in cheering on his favorite teams, the Minnesota Twins and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Throughout his life, CLS was an important part of John’s journey, providing support, opportunities for community involvement, and connections that enriched his life over the years. His involvement with CLS helped him build lasting relationships and remain connected to the people and activities he enjoyed. John will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind and gentle soul whose life was enriched by community, companionship, and the everyday moments that brought him joy.

John is survived by his sisters, Beth Wallace and Laura McCann.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alberta, and his siblings, Scott, Marie, and Patty.

John’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Community Living Services for the many years of support, care, and involvement in John’s life. They are grateful for the relationships built, the experiences shared, and the continued assistance CLS provided throughout the years. CLS was an important part of John’s life, and the family deeply appreciated the role the organization played in supporting him and helping him remain connected to his community.

Guestbook

  1. I first met John in the middle 1980’s while we both did lunch at Hardee’s in south Fargo. Over the course of many meets and learning more about him, I asked John if he would like to work for Dakota Supply Group as our Custodian and he was excited about the opportunity. It started a long relationship between DSG and John that grew into an appreciation of his determination to succeed at this new challenge. He worked hard and did well in spite of his handicaps.
John was a great employee, person and friend. He will be missed.
