Alice V. Engel, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed way Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo surrounded by family.
Alice was born August 3, 1953, in Moorhead, MN to Edward and Margaret (Schulz) Thorstenson. Alice was raised in Fargo and graduated from Fargo South High School. Pursuing her passion for helping others, Alice earned a nursing degree from North Dakota State College of Science and her journey in nursing began at Rosebud, SD, where she committed herself to caring for those in need. Although her time there was brief, she loved working there and the experience positively shaped her career path. Later, she played an integral role in establishing and supporting the local Planned Parenthood clinic alongside her dear friend Barb, during the clinic’s formative years. From there, she dedicated many years to the medical field, contributing her expertise to institutions such as St. John’s Hospital and MeritCare.
Alice met the love of her life, Darrold Engel, and they later married on February 22, 1988, spending 33 wonderful years together. They made their home in Fargo with their two children, Rhonda and Joseph. Alice was a vibrant presence at Olivet Lutheran Church, actively participating in the prayer shawl ministry and ensuring birthday cards were never forgotten. Her faith held a special place in her heart, guiding her actions throughout her life and how she treated others. Alice was bright, honest, and funny with a great sense of humor. Above all, she loved her family more then anything in the whole world. We know how much she loved us, and we loved her as well.
Alice leaves behind her children, Joseph (fiancé, Jess) Engel, Rhonda Engel Bauer (Scott); granddaughter, Carly Bauer; and grandson of the heart, Austin Hiltwein. Also left behind are siblings, Anita (Doug) Dowell, Lyle (Pam) Thorstenson, Audrey (James) Nitschke, and Leslie (Sarah) Thorstenson.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Darrold; and her parents.

I was saddebed to learn of Alice’s death. I will be joining via live streaming. She was such a devoted and faithful mother, grandmother, wife of Darrold. I can imagine Darrold and her sitting in their chairs, discussing the many issues of this day which were upon their hearts. Alice was one who was so honest and open of her views on life. That openness she instilled in her children Joe and Rhonda. I give thanks for her life and presence in my life. May the love she shared bring memories of her. May you find peace in her passing and comfort for your journey as you grieve her loss. Alice was not just a parishioner, but also a nurse who served others by her care and love.
Alice was a one of a kind warrior, advocating for her family, friends, patients, and neighbors. She leaves a legacy of love, strength, and faith. Know you are in our prayers.
