Arlene Haux, 97, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, August 17, 2025, at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo, ND, while under the care of hospice.
Arlene Judith Swenson was born November 29, 1927, at Kindred, ND. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. She graduated from Kindred Public School in 1945 and attended Concordia College in Moorhead Minnesota, graduating with a BA in music and a minor in English in 1949. Arlene was a member of the Concordia Concert Choir that performed in Norway in 1949. After graduation, she taught school in McClusky, ND, where she met her future husband. Arlene married Ervin Haux at Norman Lutheran Church, Kindred, ND on June 30, 1953. They made their home on a farm east of Kindred, raising crops, cattle, and three sons. The couple lived there until 1990 when they moved to their next home near Kindred. Arlene taught piano in her home and was the Norman Church organist for over 40 years. Ervin passed away in 1992. Following Ervin’s passing, Arlene continued living in her country home until moving to Bethany on 42nd in Fargo in 2016.
Arlene loved the Lord, her family, music, writing, watching her grandkids show livestock, flowers, chocolate, shopping for clothes, donating to worthy causes and the last several years of her life an occasional trip to the casino near Hankinson, ND, her last trip this past June. She participated in 4H for many years, helping her sons with their 4H projects and working at Achievement Days. She wrote profusely over the years, anything could become the subject of a story, poem, or a skit. Her Christmas letters became a much-anticipated annual tradition and she always had a game or two for her family to play on Christmas Eve prior to opening presents. Prior to moving to Fargo, she directed a series of annual dinner theaters at Norman Church, the last two being originals which she wrote. Numerous puppet skits were written over the years and performed at Norman Lutheran Church during Sunday services. Arlene also wrote several skits at Bethany, recruiting fellow residents to perform in them. Arlene spent many hours doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, crafts, reading, playing cards and participating in the many activities Bethany offers their residents. She considered herself a free spirit and made the most of the time given to her. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ervin; parents, John and Minnie Swenson; sister Geraldine and brother-in-law, Arnold Ektrom; an infant sister; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She is survived by her sons, Steven (Sandra), Kindred, Jonathan, Kindred, and Daniel (Maureen Sullivan), Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Whitney (Justin) Vogel, Rogers, ND, Mattea (Preston Bucholz), West Fargo, ND, Aaron (Emma), Kindred; great grandchildren, Walter and Evelyn, Kindred, and Bodie, West Fargo, ND; and special friend Laurie Paulson, Davenport, ND.
Arlene’s funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Norman Lutheran Church rural Kindred, ND followed by burial at the Norman cemetery and a noon dinner.
Memorials may be given to HIA Hospice, Norman Church Foundation and Bethany Homes.
Arlene’s family would like to thank the staff at Essentia Hospital, Bethany on 42nd, and HIA Hospice for your compassion, care and kindness.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Fredrikson-Boulger Funeral Chapel, Kindred.

Please know how sorry I am about the loss of your Mom. She is the sweetest and STRONGEST lady I’ve ever known. She will always be loved and sorely missed. I will keep you all in my prayers.

I’m very sorry to hear of the loss of Arlene. I took piano lessons from her for 10 years and attribute much of my love of piano to her. She always made it fun and had a wide variety of genres to try. I will always remember her Christmas piano parties where I learned to play her favorite game of Bunko! She also kept it fresh with her creative recitals. I recall having a recital where we all dressed up in character along with our song. I dressed as a ringmaster playing a circus song. I feel lucky to have known her and will never forget her!
thoughts and prayers as with you and the entire family. Arlene taught piano to my nieces and nephews, they said she was always kind and patient. Bethany staff and residents were blessed to have her share her many talents with them ❤️🎼🎼
Our sympathy to all Arlene’s family. It looks like she lived a good happy life. Keeping you in thought and prayer.
Arlene is very special to us, and we will remember her fondly. She contributed so much to Kindred and Norman Church. Lee said she was his favorite teacher! Thank you Arlene.
So sorry to hear of your mom, gma, great gma’s passing. She was a spit fire and I always enjoyed seeing her and talking to her when she was in her element! ie: church and her plays. She brought happiness and joy to all those around her.

As well
I have so many fond memories and stories about Arlene that it has been difficult to figure out where to start and what to include to prevent a full dissertation. She was like a bonus grandmother, there for every major milestone in my life. It all began with years of piano lessons, then our duets during major services and events at Norman, and then keeping in touch even after I moved away. I will miss the annual Christmas letters, and I will continue to practice my part of our Christmas duets just as I have every year. I’m devastated that I cannot be there to pay the appropriate level of respect that Arlene unquestionably deserves. Thank you, Haux family, for sharing her with all of us.
