Charles Nelson

May 21, 1937 ~ September 27, 2025

Born in: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Resided in: Davenport, North Dakota

Funeral Service:

Charles A. Nelson, 88, of Davenport, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at the Fargo VA Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Charles was born on May 21, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bertha Nelson and grew up in Hitterdahl. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, spending time stationed in Germany and various places throughout the United States.

In 1960, after returning from service, Charles married the love of his life, Janine Meyer. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and purpose. They started out in Fargo, where they lived until 1976 before moving to a house outside Davenport — a home Charles remodeled with the help of his family, and continued working on as a lifelong project.

Charles spent a few years working at Northern States Power Company, until he and Janine became the owners and operators of the Nelson Rest Home in Fargo, where they worked together for 30 years. He then continued working in maintenance at the Days Inn and later at Lutheran Social Services before retiring.

Charles loved spending time outdoors — hunting and camping when he was younger, and fishing in his later years. But more than anything, he loved being with his family and friends. Whether he was sharing stories, fixing something around the house, or enjoying a quiet day with a cup of coffee and his favorite country music, he was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved.

Charles is survived by his children, Jennifer (Les) Rheault of Fargo, ND; John (Stacey) Nelson of West Fargo, ND; Jayne Arabanos of Chanhassen, MN; and Michael (Michelle Borud) of Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren — Brandon, Braden, Shannon, Nelson, Allison, Lexandra, and Charlie — and two great-grandchildren, Brantley and Brielle. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Janine; his son, Tommy; and his mother, Bertha.

Charles will be remembered for his hard work, quiet strength, and the deep love he had for his family. His kindness and warm presence touched everyone who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

A funeral service for Charles will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, October 3, 2025 at Boulger Funeral Home, with visitation starting at 1:00pm. Charles will be laid to rest at 4:00pm at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. So sorry Nelson family for your loss, Charles was a great neighbor growing up and always had farm kittens around. He was a sweet, gentle soul, glad to have known him.

  2. Nelson Family,

Jim and I offer you the most heartfelt condolences on the passing of Charlie. He was such a fixture when we were going up in the 12th Avenue South neighborhood. Your dad was a huge part of the neighborhood family.

I will always remember the yearly block parties with a barrel of refreshment, lots of food, and many games such as volleyball or badminton. I remember your dad always willing to join on whichever side needed help in volleyball. His goal was to have fun. He was a wonderful man who we will always remembered fondly.

    David and Jim Kuebler

  3. Sorry for your loss, Nelson family. We couldn’t have asked for better neighbors. God bless you all.
