Dan L. Vogel

Danny (Dan) Lee Vogel was born on February 24, 1952, in Lisbon, North Dakota, to William A. and Esther Vogel. He grew up in Fargo, ND, and at 18, enlisted in the Army as a paratrooper. Dan bravely served in the jungles of Vietnam as both a parachutist and infantryman. After becoming seriously ill from Leptospirosis and Malaria, he was honorably discharged to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and eventually returned to Fargo.

Upon returning home, Dan began working at Burlington Northern railroad while still serving in the army reserves. He devoted 40 years to the railroad, working as a brakeman and switchman, before retiring at the age of 60.

Dan met Sandra (Sandy) DeVault, and they married in 1972. Together they had a son and daughter and recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. Though Dan never spoke of it, he was deeply proud to provide for his family and would support anyone in his immediate or extended family if they were ever in need. He cherished spending time with his loved ones, creating memories at lake cabin rentals, trips to Florida, attending sporting events, and sharing meals. Wherever they were, Dan and Sandy welcomed family members to join. After retirement, they became snowbirds, enjoying winters in various locations throughout Florida.

Over the course of his life, Dan enjoyed hobbies such as bowling, golfing, fishing, playing cards, and fantasy football but his greatest joy was being grandpa to his only grandchild, Ashleigh. While Dan wasn’t great with small talk, he treasured conversations with those close to him and delighted in sharing his latest “dad joke.” He was a person who worked to right his wrongs, and a provider who fought for his country and family. Dan found happiness in making others feel good and never judged those less fortunate. He never forgot his roots and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Vogel; children Daniel Vogel and Laura Vogel-Rahman (Barry); granddaughter Ashleigh Vogel; brother William C. Vogel (Judy); sister Susan Vogel; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Dukeanna Jones.
