Dorothy Hanson, 97, Fargo passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo.

Dorothy Esther Hanson was born January 28, 1928, in Robinson North Dakota and was the youngest daughter of Dominik and Lillian (Barnet) Subart. After receiving her teaching certificate, she taught school at Bordulac, ND for 2 years, married Glenn Hanson in 1949 and moved to a farm near Chaseley, ND.

Like most farm wives, she raised children, cows, chickens, pigs, cats, parakeets, dogs and cats. The family loved those parakeets but they scared Kathy Weckerly half to death. She created a garden that could have fed half of the county, canned and froze most of the food the family ate. She became known as producing some of the best dill pickles in Hurdsfield, ND. She was an excellent cook and baker, mastering Mary Subart’s bread recipe and baking enough goodies to again feed half the county. She was a leader for 4-H, Sunday School, a chauffeur, a milker of cows, slopper of hogs, and gatherer of eggs.

She loved when the granddaughters visited and spent time helping hang laundry on the clothesline, walking out to the mailbox and listening to her tell stories about “the old days” when she was a kid. She could entertain the entire Subart or Hanson family with finesse on holidays, tolerated her children bringing friends in for meals or sleepovers, and provided food for almost every school and church event.

Survivors include her children, Wayne Hanson of Cedar Rapids, IA and Val Hanson of Fargo, ND, grandchildren, Rondi Hanson of Des Moines, IA and Greta Hart of Cedar Rapids, IA as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Dominik and Lillian Subart, husband Glenn Hanson, and siblings Hermen Subart, Joe Subart, Hedwig Klonecky, Georgia Orner, Alyce Dockter, Lorraine Hill.

Dorothy’s family wishes to express their appreciation to all the caregivers at the Bethany Retirement Community for the wonderful care and attention they provided in the final years of her life.

  1. Aunt Dorothy will be miss by me snd all who knew and loved her. I have such fun memories of our times at their farm and in later years our long phone conversation about any topics that struck our fancy. We could always find things and situations to giggle about it seemed. She was our last living relative from the prior generation and believe me she had lots of stories to share. I will definitely miss her.

  2. Dorothy made me a beautiful gown and matching robe to wear in the hospital when I had my babies. I always enjoyed visiting with her whenever I saw her. Our deepest sympathies to her family!

  3. Aunt Dorothy you will be missed. She was my God-Mother. My mom’s favorite Aunty. What a great woman.

  4. Arland Brynjulson; Dorothy would call my mom about what we did for the paper. Which would be the Wells County . She was a good neighbor and friend of my parents. RIP Dorthory.

  5. So sorry for your loss. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I remember going to church at Blessed Sacrament with Darlene Berube (my mom). Mom always said that she had to say Hi to Dorothy, or make sure she was at church. We would also go visit Dorothy at Bethany. Wonderful memories!
Dorothy, give mom a hug for me in heaven 🙏🏼 God Bless you all! RIP Dorothy
    Lori Lunde (Darlene Berube’s daughter)

  6. What a special aunt, Dorothy was. Was always interested in what we were doing on our little “hobby” farm and what I was growing in my garden. Special visits at the farm, when little, and even a few sleepovers in Fargo! I am going to really miss her!! Rest in Peace Lovely Lady!!!

  7. I loved Dorothy’s quiet sense of humor. One memory we would often talk about is when she came and stayed at the apartment Val and I were sharing. Jessie, the cat, turned on the light in the middle of the night by pawing at the light switch. Val and I were sleeping in the murphy bed, Mom on the couch. We all sat up and stared at Jessie who was as surprised as we were, and wondering why we were all looking at her.

She was always very good to me and called me her “other daughter.” She was a great cook and would often send frozen containers of her vegetable barley soup, and fresh veggies from the farm (along with Uncle Herman’s pickles). She was a sweet, gentle soul and will be greatly missed.
