Born in: Oakes, North Dakota
Resided in: West Fargo, North Dakota

Douglas Leroy Schlichting was born on February 8, 1957, in Oakes, North Dakota, to Marlys and William Schlichting. He was the oldest of five children and spent most of his youth surrounded by close family, growing up and attending school in Fargo.

Following graduation, Douglas felt a strong desire to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force in June of 1975. He served as a law enforcement officer working with service dogs and was stationed in the Philippines, where he met his first wife, Yolanda, and her son, Jowie. Over the course of his 16 years of service, Douglas rose to the rank of sergeant. After his time in the military, he returned to North Dakota to be closer to family and was honorably discharged.

In October of 1993, Douglas married Debra Kloster, and together they made their home in Ashley, North Dakota. They were blessed with four children: Tiffany Kelstrom (Dennis), Jeremy Schlichting, Kaela Thorgramson (Wesley), and Matthew Schlichting (Victoria). Douglas was a devoted provider for his family, working as a certified nursing assistant for many years before retiring from the Wishek Living Center. He enjoyed the outdoors, taking his family camping and fishing. He looked forward to retirement as a time to enjoy life at a slower pace, surrounded by friends, family, and his church community.

In his later years, Douglas treasured time spent with loved ones. He was active in his church, enjoyed hunting trips with his sons, and found great joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow. He appreciated life’s simple moments and approached each day as a gift.

On April 6, 2026, Douglas passed peacefully in his sleep at his home in Fargo, ND. He is survived by his fiancé, Ma.Valyn; his children and grandchildren; and three brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Douglas’ family will be holding a memorial service at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Living Waters Lutheran Church with a visitation one hour prior.
