Elaine’s service will be livestreamed below on 12/18/2025 at 2:00 PM.
Elaine A. Marquette, 90, Fargo passed away Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Sanford Health, Fargo.
Elaine A. Stadum was born on the family farm to Carl and Mabel (Ness) near Baker, North Dakota, on July 31, 1935. Elaine, the youngest of eight children, knew what it was like to be around love, laughter, and noise.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Valley City State University in 1960. Elaine and George D. Marquette were united in marriage on August 27, 1960 and began their married life in Milnor, ND, before having three children.
Elaine was a homemaker, teacher, school librarian, and in later years, County Superintendent of Schools.
She loved her home state and carried it with her wherever she went, often reading books about its history and people. She embodied true Midwest kindness. When traveling, if she met someone from North Dakota, she would strike up a conversation immediately, almost always discovering a shared connection before long. That was one of Elaine’s greatest gifts; she could talk with anyone about anything and make them feel like an old friend.
Conversation and coffee were a constant presence in Elaine’s life, whether she was playing a competitive game of Scrabble, enjoying wordplay, or visiting friends. She treasured her friendships and made a point to stay in touch, even maintaining close relationships with her high school and college friends throughout her life. Elaine truly loved her friends, and they loved her right back.
Elaine had a special way of holding on to what mattered. She saved photographs, handmade Christmas ornaments from her children, and countless keepsakes that told the story of her life and the people she loved. Through these treasures, she preserved memories and moments that meant the world to her.
A proud and strong-willed first-generation American of Norwegian heritage, Elaine made sure her roots were never forgotten. From lefse to krumkake, she shared her culture with pride and joy, often best enjoyed with a warm cup of coffee.
Elaine was a bright light in the lives of all who knew her, spunky, energetic, and full of life. Her warmth, love, and spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Elaine would always say, “You won’t learn much by staying home.”
She is survived by her husband of 65 years George; three children Jackie (Corey) Cleveland, Jane (Peter) Brandes, and Jason (Andrea) Marquette, seven grandchildren; Jessie (Joe) Brady, Michele (Jonathan) Moquist, Benjamin (Lauren) Cleveland, Katy Brandes, Henry Brandes (Erin Barker), Colin Marquette, Paige Marquette, and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings; Orville (Mabel), Clifford (Betty), Ernest (Lilly), Selma Sundet (Oscar), Norman, Mildred, and Ina.

What a great lady! Elaine will be greatly missed-always a friendly smile & good friend to all-Bob & Eileen Lotzer
Thank you for your kind words!
God Bless you (Jackie, Jane and Jason). Share the memories of Mom; she was a good lady who loved you and wanted the best for you.
Thank you for you kind words! We sure miss her.
I will remember your mother as a very happy lady. What great times our moms had together. To be so lucky to have a best friend for most of your life . . . a treasure. In calling my mother Lillian this week, she did NOT tell me of your mom’s passing. I’m sure she couldn’t even speak it. I found out from my brother in Fargo. Distance will keep me from getting Mom to the funeral, but know she is there in spirit. If either of you would be so kind to call her, I know it would mean the world. If ever either of you pass through St. Paul, I’d love to see you. Now that you have my email, I hope that you will reach out. My sincere sympathy to you both.

We feel so bad we were not able to make it to the service (due to the storm in GF) and celebrate a wonderful woman’s life! We were looking forward to seeing you all.
Elaine was always so upbeat and friendly. We have both known her our whole lives and she will be missed! We are so thankful she and George were right across the hall from Mom at Edgewood. It made Mom’s transition that much easier and Mom considers
ed Elaine a very good friend. ❤️ Our deepest sympathy to you all! We take solace in the fact she is out of pain and with our Lord. 🙏 Hugs to you all! 🫂

Coleen and Rick, Thank you so much. It was such a blessing to have your Mom at Edgewood with our parents.
Thank you so much for your kind words, she very much loved working as Superintendent of Schools.
Dear George and family,
I just learned of Elaine’s passing today. If I had known and the weather wouldn’t have been so bad, I would have come to her service. We taught together in Milnor many years ago but I have very fond memories of her. She always had a smile on her face and was a very special person.
Sincerely, Annette Kuchera
Wyndmere, ND
Thank you Annette, we really appreciate your kind words.
