Ernest’s memorial mass service will be livestreamed at 2:00 PM Monday April 21, 2025.

Ernest passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo, at the age of 92.
Ernest, known to his family as “Gene” and “Ernie” to his friends, was born on December 29, 1932, on a farm southwest of Glover, ND, the son of Carl and Mary (Hajek) Iverson, while a blizzard raged for three days. Lena, his father’s sister, was the midwife that delivered him – she referred to Gene as ‘her boy’ for years.

Ernest grew up on the family farm and attended country school in his early years. After the eighth grade he attended LaMoure High School, graduating in 1951. Gene proudly served his country, first in the Army National Guard, later in the United States Air Force for four years. After basic training he enrolled and completed an Electronic Fundamentals Course where he was assigned to an airport airways communication squadron in Limestone, MA. This had three detachments in three other air bases in Maine. Gene was discharged from the service on June 3, 1955, and returned to North Dakota where he was employed by Sig Olson and Son’s Construction for 23 years. He ended his working career at Anheuser-Busch Maintenance Plant in Moorhead, MN, where he retired in 1998.

Ernest was united in marriage to Donna Schnoor on February 18, 1956, and two children were born to this union – Barbara Jean Iverson and Jamie Joe Iverson. Barbara passed away in 1992, and Jamie passed away in 2018 – both of whom are laid to rest in the family plot at Holy Cross North Cemetery.
During his retirement, Gene met Marjorie Stegge in Fargo. They were married at Nativity Catholic Church in Fargo on May 28, 1994, by Fr. Dave McCaulley. Gene and Marjorie were soul mates and enjoyed several years together before health problems slowed them down. Marjorie passed away on January 11, 2021 – part of Gene passed with her. She was laid to rest at Holy Cross North Cemetery where they will now be together again.

Gene is survived by his one remaining sister, Sue Ellen Wagoner; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by all of his other family – including his two children – Barbara and Jamie; his wife, Marjorie Iverson; and his siblings – Charlie, Bob, Lawrence, Romie, Carroll, Buzz, Arvid, Shirley, Evie, Don, Al and Inez.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I work at Riverview in the dining room. I really enjoyed serving Ernie. He was always so grateful for any help in ordering his meal. We will all miss him. Rest in peace, Ernie 🙏

  2. I work at Riverview in the dining room. I always enjoyed serving Ernie. He was such a kind man and very appreciative of any help. We will all miss him. May he rest in eternal peace.

  3. Ernie and I worked many years together at the Anheuser Busch Malt Plant in Moorhead, MN. There are so many fond memories of interactions at work and at many company parties and functions during that time. And at one period of time we both lived close in the same neighborhood in South Fargo. After retirement we would occasionally run into each other around town and have a great conversation. So sad to see you go old friend. And Ernie, remember: “For All You Do – This Buds For You!”.

  4. Gene worked in our family plastering business for 20 plus years from the 50’s to the 70’s. As a teenager, I had the distinct pleasure to tend this highly-talented plasterer and nice man who had an awesome sense of humor, and taught me so much. Gene, you are greatly missed, and thank you for the fond memories.
