Ernest Earl Surerus Jr, 92, Fargo, ND, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Fargo VA Medical Center with his loving wife by his side. He was born on July 17, 1929, to Ernest Sr. and Myrtle (Ault) Surerus in Cavalier, ND. Earl was baptized on December 1, 1929, at Trinity Methodist Church in Cavalier. He graduated from Cavalier High School on May 28, 1947. In October of 1951, Earl enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War until being honorably discharged in 1953, when he returned to North Dakota. On July 12, 1959, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Grafenstein at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. Thomas, ND. The couple lived in Cavalier until 1968, when they moved to Fargo, where they made their home until his passing. Earl farmed from a young age and worked for Nupdal Construction in Cavalier, ND. He later worked for Kvamme Construction, Twin City, and KBW Construction in Fargo. He enjoyed working with many people along the way and spoke highly of many coworkers. Earl was an active member of the Dilworth Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He enjoyed walking and visiting with neighbors. Earl attended many sporting events, concerts, etc., to cheer on his grandchildren. He liked relaxing outdoors, just sitting in his chair behind the pick-up in the garage. He enjoyed watching professional sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball. Coin collecting was another one of Earl’s hobbies. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn of Fargo; children, Randall (Cindy) Surerus, Fargo; Lori (Harry) Hawk, Dilworth; and Michael (Krea) Surerus, Glyndon; grandchildren, Chris (Lindsey) Flaten, Brittany (Ryan) Cameron, Travis (Larissa) Surerus, Jared (Laura) Hawk, Trevor (Jordyn) Surerus, Justin Hawk, and Bradley Surerus; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Zoey, Paisley, Clay, and Cora; brother, Howard; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Betty, Ruthie, Donna, and his brother, Milt; and his infant son, Bradley. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the CLC at the Fargo VA Medical Center for their exceptional care. There will be a memorial service at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Dilworth Lutheran Church, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial at Fargo National Cemetery.

  4. I was very sorry to hear of Earl’s passing. He was a kind, gentle Christian man who loved his family and always took time to visit and listen to his neighbors. I too enjoyed his quite wisdom & dry humor. Condolences and prayers for Marilyn and all their family. Thankfulness that he is free of suffering and all the weights of this world. He is home in Jesus welcoming arms.
