George’s service will be livestreamed and viewable below starting at 10:00 AM Friday, October 24, 2025:
George Matthiensen was born August 8, 1928 in Moorhead, MN. George married Phyllis (Johnson) Matthiensen March 12, 1949 and were married for 76 years. Together they raised 4 children, Keith Matthiensen, Hot Springs, SD, Laurie (Steve) Paulsen, Big Cormorant Lake, MN, Mark (Bernadette) Matthiensen, Albuquerque, NM, and Jan (David) Krauter, Moorhead, MN. They have ten grandchildren, Keith (Robbie), Leslie, Amy, Erin, Suzanne, Angeleah, Alan, Jordan, Devin, and Courtney; two step grandchildren, Shauna, Rhauna; and fourteen great grandchildren, Ally, Levi, Ella, Nolan, Hadley, Kole, Emery, Hayden, Hunter, Parker, Paisley, Kyson, Jason, and Aydin.
George always had a passion for his wife, his family, his dogs, and his cars. He was a quiet man, but a man that would do anything for his family. He worked hard to provide for his family to give them the best life he possibly could.
He started out working for Burrell Motors in downtown Fargo. From there he went to Selland Motors. He could tell you what model and year a car was as he saw it on the road and he was very seldom wrong. He made many friends at Selland’s and kept those friends for many years. Many of those friends went bird hunting with him. He would bring home his limit and tell the stories of his dogs and his friend’s abilities in the fields. He often took his family on many hunting excursions.
George trained dogs and would sometimes sell them after he trained them to be excellent field trial and hunting dogs. He entered trials and won many ribbons and trophies for their excellence.
George worked 23 years for the Cereal Science and Technology Department at North Dakota State University. He also worked at the Black Building at night. He was a man that gave his best to everything he did and to everyone he knew.
George was preceded in death by his mother, Mable Dougherty; and sisters, Rose Ohnstad and Barbara Petersen.
He will be greatly missed by his family.
