In Loving Memory of James “Jimmy” Newgren
December 27, 1936 – August 28, 2025
Fargo, ND — James “Jimmy” Newgren, a beloved member of the Fargo community and lifelong servant of the Salvation Army, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at the age of 88.
He broke the mold on December 27, 1936 when he lit the world up with his presence. Jimmy dedicated his life to the mission and ministry of the Salvation Army. Whether ringing bells in the winter or volunteering to serve up food at the homeless shelter, Jimmy’s devotion to service was unwavering and deeply felt by all who knew him.
Jimmy wasn’t known just for his generosity, he was known for his laughter. He was a natural-born jokester. He had a gift for turning even the most ordinary moment into what we can treasure now as hilarious memories. One of his favorite jokes he would tell was “what do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear,” and then he would give you his signature laugh and smile that always came afterwards.
Jimmy leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and faith—a legacy that will live on in the countless lives he touched.
A memorial service and lunch will be held at The Salvation Army on September 12th, 2025 at 2:00pm where friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of a man who gave so much and asked for so little.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army in Jimmy’s honor
Jimmy whimsy we love you dearly. You and Doc and Major and Bob are beloved elders at the Salvation Army for many years. You helped every Sunday picking up the yard so the smokers would not get in trouble. One time I saw you at herberger,s with two women and before I could say anything, you said relatives and kept right on walking. Cheese balls we worried Hugo would go broke as he kept you supplied. Thank you Jimmy for being our friend and thank you Jesus for sharing Jimmy with us amen Sharon.
I remember when we were little you used to tell us scarry stories until we almost cried. Then we would ask you to tell us some more.jimmy you rest in peace
Your niece Ruth
You and my husband always went back and forth joking with one another.
Your joking banter and smile will be missed.
You are now in the presence of God! You are “Promoted to Glory!”
It took me forever to come up with what to say. Jimmy you were one of a kind. You made me laugh everytime I saw you and I dont laugh much at all. Thank you for everything you did for the church, for my family, and for me. You’ll never be forgotten. I hope you and my grandpa are having the time of your life. RIP Jimmy 💔
I think this picture of Jimmy is so fitting!! He was always so proud of everything that he did for the Salvation Army and what he did for them He truly devoted all of his time and efforts in a whole hearted way!! Even though Jimmy had some issues, just like the rest of us, he gave Life his all ! He always tried to goof around and have fun and used his humour even through the difficult times of his life. He would help anyone if he could. I can see your family kicking up feathers to welcome you home Jimmy! So each year when you continue to donate to the Salvation Army please remember Jimmy at that moment and be grateful for all he did for them! RIP Jimmy!
Rest in peace Jimmy.
