Janet Murphy

August 22, 1947 ~ November 30, 2023
Janet’s Celebration of Life will be livestreamed below at 10 AM, Thursday December 7, 2023
Janet Marie Murphy passed peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday November 30, 2023. Born in Grafton in August of 1947 to Jim and Winnifred Murphy, Janet spent her early childhood in California, Montana, and North Dakota before setting in Granville, ND. She graduated from Granville High School in 1966 and continued long term friendships with her close-knit group of classmates. After graduating high school, Janet moved to Minot to attend Minot State University where she earned her teaching degree, married Airforce serviceman, Robert Hearn, and eventually gave birth to her only child, Carly, in 1977. Janet served as an elementary teacher for Carpio Public School for 25 years, and when it closed its doors, she earned her Library Degree and served as the Librarian for Belle and South Prairie Public Schools. Eventually she accepted the Director Position for the Ward County Library where she served the Minot and surrounding communities for several years before retiring early to move to Fargo to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. In Fargo, Janet served as a librarian for the Fargo and West Fargo Public libraries and Director of the Friends of the Fargo Public Library Bookstore.
Janet was known for her service to community, advocating for literacy and dedicating her life to education. She was awarded several accolades for her work, including Adult Literacy Volunteer of the Year. In her spare time, she loved to read, garden, travel, play musical instruments, and go bird watching. She belonged to several book and garden clubs over her lifetime and learned to play several instruments. She especially loved playing the accordion and her time performing with the Sons of Norway. More than anything, she loved time with her daughter and granddaughter and being surrounded by her brothers and sisters who always kept her laughing. She was most revered for her empathy, compassion, and unconditional love towards those who knew her.
Janet is survived in death by her daughter, Carly Hearn, granddaughter, McCartney Jundt, sisters Marilyn Murphy and Karla Murphy, brothers Bill Murphy and Dan Murphy, nieces Jennifer Murphy and Meegan Murphy, and nephew Andrew (Kayla) Murphy as well as great nieces and nephews, extended family and many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Jim and Winnifred Pennfield, sister, Nancy Murphy and brother, Steve Murphy. Celebration of life services will be held at Boulger Funeral Home on Thursday December 7, 2023 at 10:00am with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Homeward Animal Shelter or Friends of the Fargo Public Library, two of her greatest passions.

It was always a joy to visit with Jan. She was such a nice woman. I especially enjoyed our conversation on the VERY RARE occasion when I would go the library… she always tried to get me to read more!!
Peace and prayers to you all!
Sorry to hear about Janet. My husband Robert and I went to school with Janet in Granville.
Jan Murphy
It is a privilege in life to encounter people who are the most incredible givers and their life revolves around making the world a better place for others. Jan Murphy was one of those people.
When she moved to Fargo from Minot, she was helping her mother and was volunteering at the Fargo Public Library bookstore. She was on the board of the Friends of the Fargo Public Library. She was the active liaison from the Friends of the Fargo Public Library to the Fargo Public Library Board of Directors. She took on the responsibility of running the bookstore and under her leadership and it grew: adding more bookshelves , increasing donations of books and a great group of volunteers to help her. Under her leadership, the Friends group running the bookstore was able to give thousands of dollars toward the Fargo Public Library to supplement their varied programming needs. Jan tried to step away but was always willing to step in between various bookstore leaders who came and went. She has been a steadfast participant since she moved to Fargo. It is rare to encounter people with the giving qualities of a person like Jan Murphy. It was a privilege to know her and in her own quiet way you wanted to give as she gave: totally and completely thinking of others.
My hope for her family and friends: Though the tears with sadness never cease, I hope the tears with laughter flow as you remember the happy times shared. God’s blessings of patience, wisdom, strength and courage for each new day. Jan will be missed but not forgotten!
Sympathies to Jan’s family. Jan was a great teacher and wonderful person. I had her as a teacher in Carpio. I rode into Minot a few times with Jan and several other teachers to stay with a friend I had in Minot when I was in 1st grade.
Mrs. Hearn was my first grade teacher. She was AWESOME in every way! I am sad to hear of her passing, prayers for her family. She was an amazing person! I am 50 years old now, and I can say that she had a lasting memory in my life. Rest in peace Janet, you touched many lives in our small school at Carpio, and you will be missed, respected, and most of all, loved!
To the Murphy family.I’m so sorry for your loss. She was a very pleasant person.may she rest in peace .
I knew Jan while she managed the Friends of the Library bookstore (Fargo) as I work at the library. She was such a gracious lady, so generous with her time and talent. She was a great asset to the community and will be greatly missed. Deep sympathies to her family and friends.
