Jerry Douglas Sandbeck, 87, was born February 26, 1938 to Esther Marie Colbert Sandbeck and Lawrence Albert Sandbeck of Aneta, ND. He passed away on August 23, 2025 at New Perspective Senior Living in West Fargo, ND.

His infancy was spent in his parent’s hometown of Aneta, ND, then in Bremerton, WA for several years in his youth before returning to Aneta where he attended and graduated from Aneta High School. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at Mayville State Teacher’s College. He later attained a Master’s degree in Ed. Administration from NDSU.

While a undergrad, he married his childhood sweetheart, Lola Mae Lee, on May 31, 1959. They lived in Mayville while Jerry finished college and then moved to Galesburg, ND where he student taught and then began his career as the Principal, in addition to teaching business classes and coaching basketball. Jerry spent all 14 years of his teaching career at Clifford Galesburg, the last seven as their Superintendent. He, Lola and Lynn lived in a small trailer behind the schoolhouse. Jeff and Joni were born while in Galesburg and the family considered it their home. It was a busy time for Jerry, who not only taught, but also continued to farm with his father. The farm being 65 miles away made for some long days and weekends! In 1974 Jerry retired from teaching to take over the farm full time and moved the family to a farmstead just north of Aneta, ND. He and Lola built their dream house there and were very active in the community and church, often in leadership roles of their organizations. Jerry enjoyed snowmobiling, their camper at Stump Lake, and later, motorcycle trips on their Honda Goldwing motorcycles. They wintered in California for many years until their first granddaughter, Taylor was born. They loved being active Grandparents, so they sold the farm in 2003 and built a new house in South Fargo, just a block and a half from Joni’s to be near their grandchildren. Taylor, Alex and Rylee were the great joys of their lives!

Jerry is survived by his wife, Lola, his daughters: Lynn, her daughter, Rylee; Joni (Steve) Webster and their children Taylor and Alex; son: Jeff; his sister: Connie Haakenson; and his Best Friend/Brother, Gelaine (Linda) Orvik. He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Lawrence.

  1. We are so sorry to hear of Jerry’s passing. He will be missed by so many. What a great man!
    Bless you Jerry!

  2. I’ve just learned of Jerry‘s passing and am sending my sincere sympathies and prayers of comfort and peace to your families. Coming from a neighboring school district, I was first introduced to Mr. Sandbeck (during my HS years) by my late husband – a former student of his. I will continue to remember “Mr. Sandbeck” as being such a fine gentleman. Throughout marriage, my husband (Reed) would recall the high expectations your Dad set for his students – remarking often that he considered your Dad to be a wonderful role model! I’m quite certain my husband was a student that pushed the buttons and boundaries during those years! ☺️Regardless, your Dad treated him with kindness. For these reasons, my husband would forever respectfully hold him in high esteem. We were so grateful that post HS years brought opportunities to become reacquainted – and blessed to become friends! We reminisced some great memories! Pretty sure there will be many heavenly humorous stories retold when they meet again! Thankful for your friendship!! Respectfully, RIP, Mr. Sandbeck! 😊

  3. Lola, Lynn, Rylee, Jeff, Joni and family,

I’m so very sorry to hear about Jerry’s passing. He was a good man, and a good and fair superintendent. Everyone respected Mr. Sandbeck, but we also liked him.
My deepest sympathies to you all. May the memories bring you comfort and peace.

    Laurie (Ust) VanEnk

  4. I first met Jerry September 1961 my first school day my senior year. My friend and classmate Curtis Bring and I introduced ourselves. He would be our teacher and basketball coach. We had a wining season and had fun.
After high school we played basketball with him in an independent league.
Later on he told us how nervous he was to become our teacher and coach because he was only four years older than we were.
We remained friends and kept in touch when he went home to farm.
He was an important person in my life and I treasure the memories.
Rest in peace my friend 🙏
