At the age of 5, John and his family moved to Cogswell, ND. He graduated from Cogswell High School in 1957. But not before meeting his high school sweetheart from Forman, ND, Betty Flesness. John enlisted in the Air Force in October 1957, where he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. When home on leave in September of 1959, he married his high school love. They returned in 1961 to make Fargo their family’s home. John made his living in the retail grocery industry in Fargo and Casselton, ND, and Breckinridge, MN. He also served with the North Dakota Air National Guard 119th Fighter Group from 1970-1976. But at heart John was an artisan in woodcarving, glass etching, and picturing framing. He was also a master at lending any friend a hand with plumbing, construction or electrical work. John loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing, camping and biking with his wife. They also spent many seasons cheering on the North Dakota State Bison football and basketball teams. John and Betty were active members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fargo from 1963 to the present. Above all, Big John loved his family especially his grandkids. They will all miss him immensely especially his great, big bear hugs. John is survived by his wife, Betty, of 61 years. Three children: sons Mark (Beth) Ferguson of Fargo, ND, Mike (Kari) Ferguson of Hillsboro, ND, and daughter Melony Olson of Overland Park, KS.
