Joyce Vasey, 89, passed away on March 27, 2024, at The Avalon of Lewis Center in Lewis Center, OH. She was born Joyce Marie Lorenz on July 17, 1934, to William and Mildred (Flom) Lorenz, on a farm near Langdon, ND. She attended country school and graduated in 1952 from St. Alphonsus High School in Langdon. In June 1955, she married Ed Vasey. Joyce graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University) in 1956 with a B.S. in Home Economics Education. She taught junior and senior high school in Ulen, ND while Ed completed his M.S. at NDSU. They moved to Fort Benning in GA for several months before returning briefly to Fargo. In 1958, the couple and newborn son moved to Indiana where Ed attended graduate school at Purdue University and Joyce worked part time in the Purdue Libraries. In November 1961, they returned to Fargo with their two sons; two daughters were born in Fargo. After Ed passed away in October 2004, Joyce remained in Fargo until she relocated to the Columbus, OH area in 2017.

Joyce loved sewing, gardening, decorating and collecting, and family history. She also enjoyed baking and will be remembered by family members for her banana bread especially. She and Ed were active members of Holy Spirit Church in Fargo.

Joyce’s family expresses their gratitude to the staff at The Avalon of Lewis Center and Capital City Hospice, who cared for her through Lewy Body Dementia.

Joyce is survived by her children: Jeff (Vicky) Vasey, Portland, OR; Mike (Paula) Vasey, Columbus, OH; Krista Vasey, Apple Valley, MN; Karla (Bill) Block, Ithaca, NY; her grandchildren: Lydia Vasey, Portland, OR; Katie, Libby, and Cece Vasey (Columbus, OH); Ben Stenhaug (Emma Karpowicz), San Jose, CA, and Kalin (Brandon) Farnsworth, Evansville, WI; Madeline Block, Newport, KY, and William Block, Rochester, NY; and her great grandchildren: Zander Stenhaug and great grandchild Stenhaug (due in August); and great grandson Farnsworth (due in May). Joyce was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

A funeral mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 27, at Holy Spirit Church in Fargo, followed by a luncheon, and then interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Fargo.

  2. Great memories of visiting North Dakota every summer and visiting Joyce and family.
    Rest softly dear cousin.

  3. We have many wonderful memories of your mother and father. Duane worked with Ed at NDSU and we played bridge with your folks. We took turns hosting so we were at your Fargo home many times. So sorry for the loss of both of your parents. Keep them in your hearts and prayers.
