Katherine "Kathy" Cuthbertson

June 23, 1949 ~ November 15, 2025

Born in: Hillsboro, North Dakota
Resided in: Hillsboro, North Dakota

Katherine Kay (Meyer) Cuthbertson, lovingly known as Kathy, of Hillsboro, ND, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Kathy was born on June 23, 1949, to Harold and Ruth Meyer. She grew up on the family farm in Hillsboro, North Dakota, where she learned the values of hard work, resilience, and caring for others—qualities she carried throughout her life.

Kathy attended Hillsboro Common #4 Country School for the first four years of her education, and she graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1967. She later married and moved to Grand Forks, where she welcomed her two daughters, Lori and Melissa (Missy). Though her first marriage thankfully ended, Kathy would go on to meet the love of her life.

While working at Northwestern Bell, Kathy met Dave Cuthbertson. The two married, and with Dave’s three daughters— Beth, Cristi, and DeAnn, their families came together, forming a spirited and lively, blended family with five girls. Kathy embraced Dave’s daughters as her own, and together they built a home filled with laughter, chaos, love, and an abundance of memories.

Kathy and Dave made their home in Caledonia, where they owned and operated the Caledonia Store, and Kathy proudly served as Postmaster. In 1983, they moved to Parshall, North Dakota, where Kathy worked at, and eventually managed, the Redwood Mixer restaurant for many years. She also volunteered as an EMT—another example of her lifelong commitment to serving others.

Never afraid to reinvent herself, Kathy returned to school and earned her LPN degree in 1996 from Fort Berthold Community College. While going to school she worked as a CNA at the Rockview Nursing home in Parshall. Nursing quickly became her true passion. She was a natural caregiver—gentle, steady, and endlessly compassionate.

Kathy and Dave moved to Kenmare in 1996 where she worked as an LPN at Trinity Kenmare Community Hospital and still found time to volunteer as an EMT. When Dave retired in 2003, they moved to Fargo to be closer to family. Kathy worked as a nurse at Manor Care in Fargo where a day off was rare. When others didn’t show up for their shift, they knew they could count on Kathy to be there. But city life was not for them, and they moved to Hillsboro after a couple of years.

Kathy continued her nursing career at Sanford Hospital in Hillsboro. Her patients adored her and her playful sense humor. Her colleagues deeply respected the dedication and warmth she brought to her work. “Everyone who worked with her has good things to say about Kathy”. She was a joy to work with and always had a song in her head as she bebopped around the halls.

After Kathy retired, Caledonia came calling once again. She and Dave bought the old store they used to run and made it into a beautiful home lovingly referred to as “The Lodge”. Throughout retirement Kathy and Dave spent several winters in Apache Junction, AZ. where they enjoyed sunshine, new friendships, and adventures. Kathy also enjoyed being part the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League through St. John’s church.

Kathy will be remembered for her generous heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. She could be “a little stubborn” in the most endearing way, was always the rock of the family, and never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and get to work. She loved animals and Hobby Lobby, enjoyed puzzles, created beautiful, beaded jewelry, crocheted and sewed, and was an exceptional cook and baker whose recipes will be cherished for generations.

Most of all, Kathy will be remembered for her steadfast love—for her family, her friends, and those she cared for throughout her life. She tried anything once, lived with a quiet strength, and touched countless lives with her kindness.

Kathy and Dave would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February, a milestone that beautifully reflected the life they built together. Their love was playful, fun, and truly one of a kind—grounded in deep respect and an unmistakable joy in simply being together. They never stopped holding hands, even on the most ordinary days, and they were known to break into a dance in the kitchen just because it made them smile. Their bond was filled with laughter, tenderness, and a quiet devotion that everyone around them admired. Dave was the personification of how a man should love and honor a woman, and their marriage was a shining example of partnership at its very best.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband Dave Cuthbertson; her children Beth Varty (Bill), Lori (Rod) Baker, Christi Sorenson, DeAnn Wika, and Melissa (Mike) Clancy; her siblings Karen Meyer, Sharon Meyer (Rod Massey), and Keith (Betty) Meyer; her siblings through marriage Gladys Meiers, Kathi (Terry) Burd, Barb Skuza; her grandchildren Lindsay Baker, Josh Baker (Tamara Greenizer, Samantha (Jeremy) Fuglberg, Taylor Wika (Danny Rude), Tanner Wika, Jenna Lautt, Brandon Lautt, and Zach Skylar, and Aaron Sorenson; and many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews who adored her.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Ruth Meyer; her mother- and father-in-law Earl and Margaret Cuthbertson; her brothers-in-law Ron and Morris Cuthbertson; and nephew Luke Meiers.

The family would like to extend its deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to the remarkable community of friends and family who walked beside Dave and Kathy throughout the challenges of her illness. Your love, prayers, visits, and quiet acts of kindness carried them more than you will ever know.

We are especially grateful to Marie and the compassionate staff at the Hillsboro hospital and HIA Hospice, whose tender care and gentle presence brought comfort to Kathy and to all of us during some of our most difficult moments. There are truly no words that can fully express our appreciation for the grace and dignity you gave her.

Our sincere thanks also go to Melissa Stern, nurse Kelly, and the entire staff of the incredible “The Bridge” program. Your unwavering support—whether in their home or helping ensure Kathy made it to her appointments—provided strength, relief, and comfort exactly when it was needed most. And to the dedicated volunteers of Meals on Wheels, thank you for nourishing not only their table, but their spirits as well.

Every gesture, every visit, every prayer made a difference. The family will forever be grateful for the love shown to Kathy and Dave.

Guestbook

  1. Greg & Mary Dronen says:

Sorry for your loss. RIP Kathy.

  2. So sorry to hear of Kathys passing, our sympathy’s go out to Dave and family.

  3. Believe it or not, Kathy was the bully of the house. She never smacked us siblings around, but you knew by her voice and facial expressions who was the boss.

Later on she mellowed out into this supportive person that you would ltestify was not the same person. For example, when I was first diagnosed with liver disease she came into the ER. I could hear her in the background saying “Oh my baby brother!” She was so worried about me and wanted to protect me. Big sister to the rescue!

We will all miss her, especially her beloved husband David. But David knows that he will see Kathy again. That takes some of the sting away.

Rest easy Sis. No more pain, no more confusion. I love you.

    Keith

Prayers for the family🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

  5. Kathy was a joy to work with at Kenmare. Dedicated, warm, dependable a comfort to the patients. She loved her work, and it showed in her care to others. God’s Blessings to you and may he care for the loved ones still here on earth.
