Lloyd Orvin Olsgard was born July 15, 1940, to Orvin and Esther (Otterson) Olsgard in Fargo, ND. He grew up on a farm near Walcott, ND, attending school and graduating from Walcott High School.
Lloyd grew up farming and developed a deep love of the land. He enjoyed raising cattle, showing horses, and barrel racing. Alongside his wife Gretchen, he raised 3 daughters: Wendy, Patti, and Stacy, who shared his love of the outdoors.
His free time was spent hunting and fishing, which he also shared with his daughters. He enjoyed attending farm auctions and never passed up a bargain box of something he might need in the future. Lloyd loved music and dancing, reading Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour and watching westerns.
On January 23, 1993, Lloyd married Sandra Mertz. They lived on a farmstead outside Leonard, ND prior to moving into Fargo. Lloyd and Sandra enjoyed traveling around North Dakota visiting family and friends and spent winters in Arizona to escape the cold weather.
Lloyd will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his fierce loyalty to friends and his love of the outdoors. He was always available to help those in need and supported his local communities. He was a lifetime member of Gol Lutheran Church until it closed, after which he and Sandra joined Kindred Lutheran Church. Lloyd passed peacefully at St. Catherine’s Skilled Nursing Facility on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Sandra; daughters Wendy Olsgard, Fargo, ND, Patti Gillette, Reno, NV, and Stacy Mead, Walcott; grandsons Jordan (Katrina) Mead, Casselton, ND, and Brant Mead, Walcott; great-grandson Tucker Mead; and his sister Carolyn (William) Miranne, Phoenix, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Sam Gillette.
A memorial service will take place at 11:00 am Saturday, January 3, 2025, at Kindred Lutheran Church in Kindred, ND, with visitation one hour prior. Interment will take place at Gol Cemetery, Kindred, ND.

To the family of Lloyd, It was with sadness that I learned of Lloyd’s passing. He was always so friendly, always had a kind word to say. Then, it dawned on me that he wasn’t only a friend to the Rustad family….he was the father to a dear friend, Stacy, and a grandfather to friends of my boys. I am So Sorry for your loss. Once again, the Kindred area lost another good one. Blessed be the memory of Lloyd. Tina Rustad
I’m so blessed to have gotten to visit with Lloyd over the last year … I enjoyed cutting his hair and he always had a great smile to share with me. Thank you for allowing me to meet him! -Amanda Torres
