Rest in peace Marlys
Marlys Erma Hareland, age 87, of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Bethany Retirement Living in Fargo.
Marlys Erma Schuler was born on August 4, 1938, in Calio, North Dakota, the daughter of Werner John Schuler and Marcella Mary (Helten) Schuler. Marlys attended grade school in Calio and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Devils Lake in 1957. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she worked until 1959 when she then moved to Fargo. Marlys began her career as a bookkeeper with Gamble Robinson Company in Fargo.
On October 13, 1962, Marlys was united in marriage to Donald Hareland in Calio, ND. The couple made their home in Fargo, where they raised their family. After her children were all grown, Marlys worked at The Village Family Service Center and later joined her husband at Agassiz Chemical and Equipment as the company bookkeeper. She continued in that role until the business was sold to their son Steven and daughter-in-law Autumn in 2007.
A devoted and active member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church since 1959, Marlys found great joy in giving her time wherever she was needed—whether helping with funeral lunches, assisting at fall dinners, or singing in the choir. Outside of church, she loved baking, spending time with her friends. She especially enjoyed attending her granddaughters’ basketball games, hockey games, dance performances, and theater events—always being their most enthusiastic supporter.
Marlys is survived by her two sons, David Hareland of Moorhead, MN, and Steven (Autumn) Hareland of Horace, ND; her six granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; her siblings Jim (Carol) Schuler of Devils Lake, ND; Duane Schuler of Munich, ND; and Arlene (Bob) Adahl of Devils Lake, ND.
Marlys is preceded in death by her husband, Donald (2019); son, Thomas (2025); brother, Alphonse Schuler (2008); and sisters-in-law, Pam Schuler (2024) and Sharon Schuler (2024).
Visitation and Prayer Service will be held at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, Thursday, October 16. Visitation at 6 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm.
The Funeral Mass will take place at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
