Melvin "Mel" A. Erdmann

July 23, 1945 ~ April 22, 2025
Melvin August Erdmann, age 79, of Hillsboro, ND, passed away peacefully early in the morning on April 22, 2025, at his residence.
Melvin was born on July 23, 1945, to August Erdmann and Sadie (Sarah) Erdmann in Fargo. He grew up farming near Alice and began his education at Pontiac School for his first two years. He later attended school in Lucca and graduated from Enderlin High School in 1963.
In 1966 he met the love of his life, Judy, at a sock hop dance in Amenia. Melvin and Judy were married on September 8, 1967, in Arthur. After their marriage, they lived in Fargo and Mapleton before finally settling down in Enderlin. There, they raised their four sons: Mark, Paul, David and Thomas until the family moved to Hillsboro in 1991.
In 1993, Melvin’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with CNS Sarcoidosis, which left him a paraplegic later that same year. During this difficult time, Melvin stayed positive and was determined to stay active in his community. Although he had started college earlier in life, he returned and graduated from Mayville State University in May of 1998.
Melvin was always eager to give back to the community and served in many roles, including Boy Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Church Call and Stewardship Committees. He also served on the Board of Red Willow Bible Camp, the Traill-Steele Affordable Rural Coalition for Health Board, the Hillsboro Park Board, and Traill County Social Services.
Melvin enjoyed talking with people and could strike up a conversation with anyone. What began as a five-minute chat often turned into a one-hour visit, as that was simply who Melvin was: generous, warm-hearted, and hard to say goodbye to. Although wheelchair-bound for 32 years, he never let that stop him from doing what he loved and pursing his passions. His family meant the world to him, and he attended every event he could to show his love and support.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy Erdmann; sons, Mark Erdmann, Paul (Abby) Erdmann, David (Cynthia) Erdmann and Thomas (Ashley) Erdmann; siblings, Darlene Sell, Earl (Marcia) Erdmann and Gene (Bonnie) Erdmann; grandchildren, Alyssa and Kayla, Madeline, August, and Miles, Grayson and Harper, Josilyn, Reagan and Finn; and step-grandchildren, Norah and Ruby.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, William Sell; and daughters-in-law, Stephanie Coltvet Erdmann and Tanya Erdmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a local charity of your choice to honor Melvin.

Judy and family: As you know Melvin was my good, good friend, meeting in 1st grade at Pontiac School #70, south of Alice, ND, and remaining friends since! Lots of adventures – highs and lows. What I loved about Melvin was his willingness to share what it was like turning 50, 60, 70, 75, especially considering the fact that he is six months older than I am . . . I will so miss his advice come July and December! Sharing news was paramount in our relationship . . . “I am asking Sandi to marry me, will you please be the best man at our wedding; we are pregnant expecting in March, will you and Judy be Corby’s godparents; . . . and so much more.” You know that I was so proud of Melvin when he decided to earn his Bachelor of Science degree at Mayville State as an “older than average student” and having me as a professor! True friends can pick up their conversations from the last visit and not miss a beat – that was the two of us. I am confident that Mel is in a great place now and has no pain . . . which I am happy for. And all of these wonderful memories will help us keep Melvin in our hearts! Blessings and support and prayers to you all. Love, Terry Kemmer and Sandi, Detroit Lakes, MN
My condolences to your family on Mel’s passing. I first met Mel in 2001 when I was the new director at Southeast Human Service Center in Fargo and he served on our Advisory Board. He always attended and participated fully, engaging in discussions about our services and representing rural needs of the region well. He was friendly, fun, and appreciated by our agency. RIP Mel.
The Coltvet family has been blessed many times over by Melvin and Judy and their family. Thinking of you all as you both grieve and give thanks for Melvin’s life. We are with you in prayer and light a candle tonight in his memory. Peace be with you, Tim and Sarah Coltvet and Family
Judy and family: I’m so sorry for your loss of Mel. I always enjoyed visiting with him whether at City Hall or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. I know that you’ll draw strength at this very difficult time from your faith,, family and friends.

Melvin was my friend when I was in in 1st grade at Pontiac School. He was a 2nd grader along with Terry Kemmer. Our schools changed as the Pontiac rural school closed, and I didn’t link back up with these guys until High School brought us together again. We became “Rat-Pac” friends and stayed that way until young adult-hood took us in very different directions. Years later we would be together occasionally to celebrate life events, but our lives were forever touched by those early years. Melvin would aways make a point of calling you on your birthday, a nice touch. A true friend.

Melvin was my cousin and a friend for all of his years. I remember Melvin as we worked on the harvest of our family farms. He was always cheerful and eager to try new things. As his older cousin by 10 years, I was expected to have the correct answers regardless of the subject.
That idea carried over into my Air Force career and later with Space Command. He was always interested in the latest technology and put me to the test; I trust he is getting better answers now. Carol and I treasure the times we spent with the family over the years. We shall miss his smile, his greeting, and his challenging conversation. God Bless.
