It’s difficult to summarize a life in a few words, particularly when that life brought your own into existence.
Nancy was born to Leo and Barbara Berg on August 5, 1949 in Breckenridge, MN. Her family moved frequently, following opportunities as they arose for years- finally settling in Leonard, ND.
Nancy graduated from Leonard High School with the class of 1967.
In 1974 she married Gerald Liedahl. Their son Kirt was born in 1974 as well, and in the following year they moved to a farm in rural Leonard, ND.
In 1976 their daughter Kirsten was born, and in the following year they moved from the farm. Nancy raised her children and supported the family through extensive gardening and often found herself maintaining the house and livestock while Gerald worked to bring home a paycheck. This would continue to be the case until Nancy had the opportunity to work with a local horse boarder, where she tended to her favorite animals with care every day for years.
By the time their kids were old enough to leave home, Nancy had been working with Tom’s Electric in Kindred, and found herself working for Dakota Hills Electric in the next chapter of that company. Here, as everywhere, she forged life-long friendships and spoiled people (not just the staff) with homemade treats- in particular Apple Bars.
While Nancy worked until her retirement in 2015, Gerald’s health was in a steady decline, ending in his passing just before her birthday in August of 2017.
It wasn’t long before Nancy’s health also began to decline, and after suffering numerous heart ailments and procedures was struck with a devastating stroke in early 2020. Following this, she moved to Maryhill Manor in Enderlin, where she was, as ever, loved by everyone she came into contact with.
Nancy passed from this world on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at the age of 75.
Nancy was very close with her children, and took great interest in Kirt’s numerous car ventures, Kirsten’s world travels and each of their daily activities. She enjoyed reminiscing and could often relate an eye-opening tale. She loved animals, and would accept nearly anything as either a pet (raccoon, cat, dog) or at least an accepted guest to the farm (striped gophers, Canadian geese, moose, the list goes on.)
Nancy will be remembered for her warmth, her absolute devotion to friends and family and for charging through dangerous and terrifying medical issues with courage and a smile. Nancy was always more concerned about others than herself, and would often spoil visitors with tasty treats and hours of fun conversation on nearly any topic.
Nancy will also be remembered for her love of gory action movies, the X-Men, a good road trip and nearly any kind of plant. Her friends and neighbors will miss her easy company and great laugh, her selfless nature and her willingness to give a perfect stranger anything she had to make their situation better.
To paraphrase one of Nancy’s favorite movies: “Take a good look, because they aren’t making any more like her.”

Kirsten, You have a gift of writing that is so easy and gentle to read. I am a 2nd cousin once removed of Gerald’s (I had to draw it out My Great Great Great Grandparents were Gerald’s Great Great Grandparents). Daughter of Jorgen and Agnes. But just so’s you know…those sandhill roots go deep. My sympathies to you and your brother and also to Darrel and Stephanie and families. My thoughts are with you all. Take care.
