Patrick F. Leier, 72 of Fargo, North Dakota passed away May 17th, 2025, at Sanford Hospital.

Patrick Francis, the son of John and Magdelena Leier was born April 1st, 1953, in Harvey, North Dakota. As the youngest child, he grew up along with his fourteen brothers and sisters on the family farm near Esmond, North Dakota. When Patrick was a teenager, they moved to Esmond where he attended school. Patrick was a great athlete and excelled at sports, particularly basketball.

He attended Jamestown College where he played basketball and graduated with degrees in English and Political Science. He attended law school at UND and graduated in 1980. He met his wife Nancy Galloway when she worked at a design shop at Columbia Mall in Grand Forks. He frequently visited the store to buy candles and flirt. They purchased street roller skates together and skated daily all over UND campus and the streets of Grand Forks. Their friendship blossomed into romance, and they married July 25th, 1981, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Grand Forks, ND.

They made their home in Williston, ND where he practiced law until 1994. They welcomed baby daughter Kaitlin in June 1987. They moved to Fargo, ND in 1995 while Nancy attended graduate school. He worked at a market research company and eventually started his own company called North American Research Group. For the past twenty-five years, Patrick was a beloved boss and father figure to many of his employees.

He enjoyed spending time on Lake Melissa in the summers and yearly winter visits to their condo in Florida. He loved working out, reading, bird watching and his precious dogs, but mostly he loved his family. He was always available to have intellectual conversations with his daughter Kaitlin as they both were similar in intellect and demeanor. He was a gentle father, a steady presence, a quiet encourager who always believed in her. Patrick loved to cook and was the main cook in the family for many years. He was always looking for a new pasta recipe and loved experimenting in the kitchen.

He a was man of few words, but when he needed to say something, it was succinct, thoughtful and to the point. Many family members and friends came to him for advice and guidance. His wit, intellect and dry humor were appreciated by many. Patrick will be remembered as a gentle, kind and deeply thoughtful man- steady in his values and unwaveringly devoted to those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, daughter Kaitlin and faithful dog Nellie, all whom he cherished more than anything else.

He is also survived by siblings Vivian, Elaine, Jerry, Beatrice, Lois, Jackie, Clement, Lynn, Dianne, Jon, Dwight, Maxine and Michael.

Surviving also are many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews from the Leier and Galloway clans.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Magdelena, his sister Jean, father and mother-in-law William and Betty Galloway and brother-in-law Charles Galloway.

May we carry forward the legacy of Patrick’s compassion for others, and may we always find him in the stillness of a lake, in the bark of a dog or in a quiet moment of peace.

Blessed be the memory of Patrick Leier.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. Patrick and I worked together for well over a decade. In fact, his work at North American played a real role in helping me get my business off the ground, and I’ll always be grateful for the steady partnership and trust we built over the years.

He was a good man—kind, fair, and deeply committed to his staff and clients. I always knew he had our back, and I truly valued working with him. I’ll miss him more than I can say.
