Phyllis Marie Solberg

September 3, 1940 ~ August 30, 2023
Resided in:
Hillsboro, North Dakota
Phyllis Marie Solberg, 82, of Hillsboro, ND, passed away on August 30th, 2023, in the comfort of her home.
She was born in Fargo, ND, on September 3rd, 1940, to Benjamin Sr. and Laura Hahn. She was raised in Casselton, ND, and was very proud to be a “Squirrel”. She enjoyed every reunion with her classmates! After high school, she moved to Fargo and worked for a telephone company. She met her husband, Norlyn Solberg, at a barn dance in Arthur, ND, in the Spring of 1961 and were married that very same year on December 29th. Norlyn and Phyllis farmed near rural Cummings, ND. In 1987, she started her work as an Activities Assistant at the Hillsboro Nursing Home until 2010. She loved working with the residents, especially baking days, and even obtained her bus license to take the residents for rides in the summer. Phyllis was known to take the residents to their family farmsteads and stopped for ice cream cones.
In her retirement, she kept very busy with her grandchildren – attending numerous football, basketball, skating, baseball, hockey, and dance events. She was a fierce spectator while attending these events. She was an excellent cook and baker. She was known for her potato salad, Norwegian Meatballs, cookies, and caramels (her mother’s recipe). When she would visit the grandchildren, they always looked forward to her chocolate chip cookies. She loved to embroider dish towels, sew quilts, and many other items. Her sisters always had a new item that she had to try.
She was very involved with Norway Lutheran Church until it closed, and then she found a new family at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. If Phyllis was in town, she never missed church. She was involved with WELCA, the Senior Citizen group, and Cardiac Move for Life.
Family was an important part of her life, and she enjoyed every occasion, especially when the family was at Lake Melissa. She always said, “Aren’t we lucky we get to come here and be together at the lake?”
She is survived by her three daughters, Stephanie (Terry) Dale, Stacey (Jay) Lilleberg and Sandra (Brad) Hoffelt along with her seven grandchildren, Troy (Hayley) Dale, Jessica (Justin) Schemionek, Kenzie Dale (Brady Blazer), Amanda Lilleberg, Sophia Hoffelt, Ava Hoffelt, Owen Hoffelt and great-grandchildren, Sawyer Dale, Sutton Dale and Baby Schemionek arriving January 2024. She is survived by her sisters, Beverly Knudson, Barbara Viestenz, Marilyn Heyenbruch; brother, Benjamin Jr. (Eleanor) Hahn and sister-in-law Nola Hahn, brother-in-law, Harlan Solberg, brother and sister-in-law Larry (Kay) Brady and sister-in-law Joyce Solberg. Phyllis was also blessed with many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norlyn, brother Edward Hahn; sisters, Marge Heuer, Marion Martin, Donna Hahn and Shirley Golliet, as well as brother-in-laws Roy Heuer, Robert Knudson, Merrill Golliet, Bill Heyenbruch, Walter Martin, Ron Viestenz and Gene Solberg along with her sister-in-law Sylvia Solberg.
God Bless the memory of Phyllis Solberg.

Phyllis was such a wonderful woman! She was the best downstairs neighbor & friend to my grandma Marlene and I always enjoyed seeing her during my visits. She will be missed oh so dearly! Sending thoughts and prayers to her family. ❤️
To Stephanie, Stacey, Sandra – your mother was a wonderful woman. I’ve always admired her for her strength and for her generosity of spirit. Perhaps my favorite memory of your mom is the joy that she brought to my mom, Avis Noell. Phyllis would quite often stop by for a visit when she was in Fargo for some other reason. My mom loved these visits.
When my mom became pregnant with my younger brother Chris, Phyllis showed up with all her maternity clothes. What an act of kindness toward my mom, who was quite stunned to be pregnant in her mid forties.
My lasting image of Phyllis is one of her sitting at my mom’s kitchen table, always with a smile on her face. After I left North Dakota I would still get updates from my mom: “Phyllis stopped by today! It was so great to see her!” Phyllis’ positive energy brought joy to so many people and I know you will carry it with you for the rest of your lives.
My sincere sympathy to you and to all in Phyllis’ family.
