Sister Agatha and her twin sister Deborah were the youngest of the eight children of Patrick Lucey and Margaret Dinneen Lucey. Born in Killarney, Co Kerry, Ireland, Sister Agatha attended Clonkeen National and Crosshaven Colaiste Muire Schools in Ireland. After coming to the United States in 1947 to enter the Presentation Convent In Fargo, she completed her secondary education at Sacred Heart Academy graduating in 1948. Agatha was received into the Presentation Order in August of 1948 and was given the name Sister Mary de Lourdes. (In 1969, she reverted to Agatha, the name she received at baptism.) She made profession of vows in 1950.

After her graduation from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Aberdeen (1953) and St. Mary’s Hospital School of Anesthesia in Duluth (1954), she served in hospitals in Grafton, Langdon, Carrington and Park River as nurse clinician, nurse anesthetist and administrator. Sister Agatha received a baccalaureate degree from the Catholic University of America and did graduate study in administration. She also pursued clinical pastoral education.

At various times Sister Agatha served on boards of directors of healthcare facilities in the area. She also served in governance of her religious Congregation, the Sisters of the Presentation. She was an early participant in the Cursillo movement and the phrase “Praise the Lord” became her mantra.

In 1987 Sister Agatha joined the administrative staff at Riverview Place and worked there until 2016. She and her co-workers, Ss. Mary and Josephine, together formed the heart of this retirement center.

Cake decorating was a hobby in which she became proficient. She enjoyed creating lovely edible designs for friends and community on special occasions. Having become proficient in Irish step-dancing during her school days in Ireland, her dance performances were the highlight of many a St. Patrick’s Day event. Skill in calligraphy was another talent she developed, and friends and relatives cherish many of the cards she made for them.

Thirty-five years ago, S. Agatha was featured in the “spotlight” section of the ACORN. The writer concluded the article with this observation: “If there is one word to describe S. Agatha, it is ‘wholistic.’ She loves life and lives it to the full. Praise the Lord.” AMEN.

S. Agatha is survived by the members of her religious community; nieces Brigid McGrath, Margaret (Declan) Fitzgerald, Frances Gordon, Lucy O’Dwyer; nephews David Mc Grath, Patrick McGrath, Padraig Lucey, Tadgh Lucey, Conor Lucey, and their families and many other relatives in Ireland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Margaret; brothers Michael, Rev. Daniel (Dan), Rev. Cornelius (Con); sisters Eileen O’Shea, Nora Murphy, Mary McGrath, Deborah Martin and nephew Donal Lucey.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I worked with Sister Agatha back in 2000-2002 when I worked at Riverview Place while attending college at Concordia. I haven’t seen her in many years, but I think of her often, and she remains one of my favorite people ever. I worked one St. Patrick’s Day and she gave me a four leaf clover pin as part of the celebration. I still have it. She basically ran down the halls to get to her next stop. I remember her saying, “I can rest when I’m dead.” I hope you are at rest now, Sister Agatha. Although I can’t picture you resting.

  2. I knew Sister Agatha from Riverview. She was full of kindness and wisdom and loved to share stories of her past. She also liked biscuits when we made them but only with marmalade jelly. You will be missed. Rest in peace faithful servant.

  3. Sister Agatha was a beacon of goodness and compassion, and always had time for everyone. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for the residents and the many of us staff who were blessed to work with her at Riverview Place. She answered so many nurse calls (day and night) during her years there, but doctored more than just ailments and injuries. Sister Agatha healed our spirits with her infectious smile and sweet nature. She truly lived the motto “doing what needs to be done”. She was a good and faithful servant of God, and she will be dearly missed.

  4. Our paths crossed numerous times through the years. I loved her spirit, skills as a nurse and her compassion for those she served. I will miss seeing her.

  5. My deepest sympathy to the Presentation Sisters in FARGO on the death of dear Sr. AGATHA.
I thankGOD for her long life of commitment and service. May she rest in peace

  6. Sister Agatha was the face of GOD to me and my family. She took special care of our mother. We tried to give her money as appreciation for all she did. She donated it all. She was special.

  7. I had the distinct honor of working with Sister Agatha for a number of years when I was one of the Riverview van drivers. In fact, she was one of the first people I met at Riverview. When we were introduced and she heard my last name, she said, ” Oh good, finally an Irishman!” But when I told her that I was part Scottish too, she said, “well, that’s not your fault”! Her sense of humor was a delight to any and all who knew and loved her!
Dear Sister, from an “almost Irish” friend, Go with God, and know that your love and caring are appreciated by all who were blessed in knowing you❤️

  8. Sr Agatha loved to come back to Ireland and spend time with family and friends. She was always kind and interested in what everyone was doing; whether it was study, work and what was going on in our lives. She returned to Ireland in 2004 when I married my husband Sean in Cork. She was very kind to my mother in law during that visit and always gave good advice. We always looked forward to her visit home and trips to her home place at the county bounds in Kerry. She lived a life of service as a Presentation nun and I always looked forward to her letters. Rest easy Sr Agatha, your Niece Frances and family

  9. Sister Agatha was one of my highlights
going to work at Riverwiew . She was deeply loved by everyone and I considered her as a Sister Theresa! God is smiling and clapping his hands now that she is with him.

  10. I am much saddened to hear of Sr Agatha’s passing. As always a day late & dollar short to pay my respects to a fantastical human being. I worked under her tutelage at Riverview Place while I was high school in the early 1990s & then again in 2001-2003. She will be missed dearly by those around her, but no doubt enjoying her reunions with family on the other side of this life in Heaven. Bless you, Agatha. May those left behind to mourn your loss take comfort in the solid fact you are happily reunited with your Creator & Father. Special condolences & prayers to Srs Josephine & Mary.
