Guestbook

  1. Mr. Wald helped lead me towards music while at Discovery more than a decade ago. Music lead to best friends and amazing experiences at Fargo South, and, in part, the life I lead today, so many years later.

Thank you so much for that. You’ve made an impact, Mr. Wald.

  2. Michele and my thoughts and prayers go out to Tom’s family. Unfortunately and regretfully, we had not seen Tom in many years. Our very best wishes and prayers.
    Cousin Michael Burgad

  3. Dear Deb and Family,
God takes the ones we love, but the ones he needs. May Tom looke down and protect you all and keep guiding the voices in heaven.
    My prayers are with you.
    Sincerely,
    Barbara Wilson-DeLange

Deb- I am so glad to see all the wonderful stories being shared on this forum and words to offer you encouragement in the months ahead. I want to encourage you as well. Please stay in touch and contact me anytime. After losing my husband in the same manner last year, it was nice to have others that understood only a phone call away. God has blessed you and will continue to bless you. 701-793-7933

  5. Salem WisconsinDear Deb and family,
Larry and I were devastated to hear about Tom’s death. I taught with Tom at Central Cass and thought he was a fabulous teacher and person. Larry and I wanted you to know our prayers are with your entire family at this time.

  6. Moorhead MN
To Deb and Family- I just returned to town to hear the shocking news about Tom. I worked with him at Carl Ben Eielson. Even though he was a high-energy guy, he always stopped in the hallway and took the time to ask how things were going. He was genuinely interested in people- colleagues, students, family. His eyes showed it. He always had something upbeat to say to others. He was a gem of a guy and he will be missed. May God bless your family with great memories of a dynamic man- someone with passion for music and everything life had to offer. He will be rockin’ the heavens and just waiting for you to someday join his celebration.

  7. Hunter ND

  8. Bismarck ND
    Good Morning Deb and family!

I am so very saddened to hear that you lost your husband, Tom. I heard from Rebecca Raber that he passed away suddenly and remembered that you said that your family was looking forward to time together and that retirement wasn’t too far off. Oh, how life throws us these curves!

Please know that I am thinking of you at this very difficult and trying time, Deb and that I offer up my prayers for strength to understand it all. Most of us don’t know the depth of this kind of grief. I want to let you and your kids know that the family and friends in your life love you and are praying. What I do know is that you are one strong woman–one I truly admire. I know your children and grandchildren will be a wonderful source of comfort. Be well and know that we have you in our hearts!
    Best wishes~
    Mary Pat Archuleta and family

  9. Bagley MN
Deb, We would like to express our deepest sympathy. The loss of Tom will surely be felt by many but not more than by you and your family. He was a great guy — talented, sincere, kind and with a wonderful sense of humor. Mort and I remember the day he hired the two of you. He said we hit a bonus, getting both a great choir director and a band instructor. You were a musically talented team and the Fargo District benefitted greatly. May the wonderful memories you have of Tom be a comfort to you now and in the upcoming months. We wish we could have been with you Friday but we had a houseful of Iowa relatives visiting and couldn’t get away. However, our thoughts were definitely with you.

  10. Fargo North Dakota

  12. Hilliard OHI am so sorry for you and your families loss! My prayers are with you. Mr. Wald was an inspiring teacher and mentor to me at CCHS! His passion for music was contagious! My best high school memories were given to me by Mr. Wald. I remeber when he started our Folk Group, we all sang and he played acoustic guitar. I loved watching the smile on his face singing and strumming away! He could so easily make people happy with his music! This world is a better place because of Mr. Wald. He brought so much joy to many in a short life time. God Bless!

  18. St. Louis Park MN
I was deeply saddened to hear of Tom’s passing, but the first thing that came to mind was” music and laughter” as I thought back to Central Cass High School. Tom was one of those people in my life that was a teacher, a mentor, a friend. His expectation of “excellence” in music education fostered many to blossom their talent and continue to touch lives for generations in the same way.

His song will always be sung in my heart.
Thank you Tom for your life, fully lived, fully loved.

  19. Fargo ND

  43. Fargo ND
I was shocked to hear of Tom’s passing. Tom was a coworker at both Agassiz and Carl Ben and a very special band teacher to 2 of my boys. I remember in 6th grade
Campbell was trying all different instruments to play and Tom suggested the Tuba just by watching how Campbell tried to play other instruments. Campbell continued his school years playing the Tuba and will be playing next year in the Bison Gold Star Marching Band. Tom’s zest of life and bright smile will be missed by all that new him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tom’s family. God Bless!

  46. McVille ND
    Deb and Family,

Several of my students over the years have had the opportunity to have Tom adjudicate their performances at Regional and State festivals. I always appreciated how positive and encouraging he was with them. I could tell that that’s the kind of person he was….patient, upbeat, and caring about students and their education. I can only imagine how shocking and painful this loss is for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  47. St. John ND
Both shocked and saddened by the loss of Tom. Ross really enjoyed golfing with him and he always made us feel so welcome with his warm friendly smile. We feel privileged to have known him and for us,
Little Toad won’t ever be quite the same. Our prayers are with you both, Deb.

  48. Edgeley ND
    Deb,
I volunteered for the priviledge of keeping Tom on schedule during music competitions. If he gave half as much to life as he gave to the kids in the few minutes he had with each group, wow. There was much to learn by listening to him talk to the kids, and some of it was about music.
I wish you well, he will be missed.

  49. Bakersfield CaSome of us have known Tom, though years ago, and have lost connection because of distance and “life”.. just amazing to read about the touch he had in so many lives…not a surprise. May God be with you Deb, the children and Tom’s sister and brothers. Our prayers will be with you tomorrow and as the days go on. Sarah and Aaron Reese

  50. Deb & Wald Family — We were so very sad to hear of Tom’s passing. He was such a big influence on Cydney and helped her find her love for playing Jazz. She was so fortunate to have had such a wonderful teacher and mentor during her middle school years. He truly let the kids shine and you could tell he loved every minute teaching and sharing his music by his actions and the ever present smile on his face. Marty & I will always remember dropping Cydney off at school early in the morning for Jazz band practice — he would be at the door waiting for the kids to arrive with his coffee cup in hand and waving as the parents dropped the kids off — again always with a smile. He even joked about it at one concert when he said he hoped parents were just waving back and not with one finger. Please know his music will live on in every student he touched — and as parents we couldn’t have asked for a better teacher then Mr. Wald! Deb — Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you! Barb, Marty & Cydney Berlinger

  51. Chicago, IL I will always remember Mr. Wald’s energy and passion for music and how he never gave up on us as students. Whether playing in the musical pit band, in sectionals, or during guitar lessons, Mr. Wald always was there cheering us on along the way. It’s because of people like him that I pursued my music degree and continue to be involved in music. He continues to be an inspiration.

  52. Deb and family,
We were shocked and saddened to hear about Tom’s passing. His love of life and warm personality were evident everytime we saw him. He will be missed at LTLC. Our prayers are with you during this unbelievably sad time.

  54. Fargo It was a shock to hear about Tom but we remember the times at Little Toad Lake sitting around outside talking and the entertaining times with Tom & Deb singing. The party for his retirement was well attended and I never saw him on his motorcycle but I know he rode off in style like he had planned. Tom will be missed and he made a difference in many lives-always a big smile and the world is a better place because of him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Tom’s very large family.

  55. Williston ND
    Deb,

You may remember me as the theater technical director at Discovery in the late 1990’s.

After leaving FPS in 2004 and spending several years in California, I now live in Williston and am involved in the oil boom here.

I just happened to read the online Forum today.

I remember doing a number of concerts with Tom, which were always marked by his musical talents and his enthusiasm for working with the students.

I know the Discovery staff is very supportive and will help you through this.

Please feel free to contact me if I can do anything for you.

    Donald Carter Kress

  56. Deb and family, Was so shocked to receive the news about Tom’s death. Losing a family member in anyway is hard, but when it is so sudden, it is so shocking. I loved working with Tom and providing the goodies he liked so much to eat was always fun because he would always tell me how much he enjoyed them. I am honored to call Tom and friend and also a very special teacher to my children, who were so blessed to have him as a music teacher. He was a very special person, who touched countless young musicians. Now through all to those lives, his children and grandchildren he will be always remembered and because of him “What a Wonderful World” we have.

  57. Fort Hood TXMrs. Wald and Family, I was so very sorry to hear of your loss. Though I did not know Mr. Wald personally, I was in 8th and 9th grade Choir at Discovery and, Mrs. Wald, though you don’t remember me, I remember you and how you always motivated me to try harder in everything I did. I will be unable to be there however, I will be praying for all of you tomorrow.

  59. West Fargo ND
    Dear Deb and Family,
I was truly lucky to have worked with Tom at Agassiz and Carl Ben Eielson. I would walk by the band room each morning and could always tell before I got to the room that it was Tom who was conducting because he always had the students rocking out! I think he was one of the nicest human beings. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  60. Deb and Family,
While I was a student of yours in Hillsboro, I actually remember when you began dating and later married Tom. What I remember the most was how happy you seemed to be. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.

  61. West Fargo Deb and the Wald Family,

I’m sorry I will not be able to join you for Tom’s memorial, but want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. As difficult as it is, there is much to be celebrated about Tom’s life and the moments we were able to share with him.

I taught with Tom at both Agassiz and CBE middle schools and found him an enlightened and supportive colleague. When I think of Tom, the word contagious bests suits his humor, zest for life, love of family, passion for music and genuine concern for his students. Whether in passing at our mailboxes, or a discussion in the lounge, Tom always added positively to a person’s day. He will be missed.

  62. How ironic that I have been trying to go thru “stuff” and have made piles of –yes, school stuff–of our 3 kyds and of course there are pictures, programs, etc…from CCHS and we had just been talking about their music days and then Jen saw on FB that you, Tom had made your way to join the heavenly angels. My own father died at age 56 from massive heart attack and I still remember the day he died–51 yrs. ago yesterday!! Sincere sympathy to Deb and the Wald family!!!! Hang on to the many wonderful memories!!!

  63. West Fargo ND

I give you this one thought to keep –
I am with you still – I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the sweet uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft starts that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone –
I am with you still in each new dawn.

Tom, you were the nicest man anyone could meet. Always happy, smiling, and had a positive energy. God speed Tom. Prayers and Love to the entire Wald Family.

Deb, Brady, Kara, Adrienn, Samantha and all family members,
I am reliving so many memories of Tom going back to when we were in high school together. Even then, Tom was a born leader, a larger-than-life personality, full of energy and fun, talented at anything he wanted to do!! We shared so much, and it is so gratifying to read all the tributes from some of the lives he has touched! Teaching music is a passion, and Tom was so good because he was always passionate! Tom was a true best friend, best man at our wedding, and a friend for life! Our sincere condolences to all of you – so glad you were blessed to have Tom in your lives! To us who knew him he will always be alive in our memories and smiling that big smile! Love, Jane and Jerry Feigum

  75. Fargo, ND
I am shocked and mourning your loss. Tom was a wonderful colleague and a teacher who really cared about and listened to kids. Tom’s enthusiasm for music, teaching, and life was evident in the classroom every day. I know, because my daughter was blessed to have him for band. He inspired and encouraged her to believe in herself. When you saw Tom, he would have a spring in his step and he reminded me of the energizer bunny. It was no secret how much he loved his beautiful wife, Deb. Family was truly important to him. When I walked around the block tonight and heard the fireworks, I couldn’t help but think that maybe Tom had switched from playing guitar for show choir to drums for the evening of the 4th! His smile, tunes, and passion for education will be missed. He made a difference in so many lives.

I am so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Wald. I will always remember your husband for his enthusiasm when he taught my son Cameron Sorrells in band at Carl Ben Eielson Middle School. I remember that was the year Cameron was first chair clarinet at All-State Band. I attribute Cameron’s success in his clarinet playing to Mr. Wald’s teaching. He was a phenominal band teacher. Thank you, Mr. Wald. You will be missed…

  82. Fargo ND

Tom was always an upbeat, smiley, positive person. I remember having the opportunity to play with the Casselton band at a tournament one year. I also remember practicing piano at the school one time and he was sitting outside the door. When I finished, he was so positive and complimentary. Such a friendly, kind man. Many memories of him at the lake when I would visit my aunt. I am so very sorry for your loss, Wald family. May the memories of Tom lift you and comfort you in the weeks to come.

Deb, Samantha and the rest of Tom’s Family, We are so sorry to hear about your loss. Tom always had time to visit with me a bit in the teacher’s lounge at SC II when he was subbing or visiting Deb. Even though our kids didn’t have the chance to have Tom as a teacher, he had a strong impact on our son David. Tom suggested that the trombone would be a good fit for David, and he was right!
Tom was a fine educator, musician, and an excellent role model for all on how to be a well rounded individual.
Tom will be missed by all.

  113. Besides his love for music excellence, Tom had a huge love for his life at the lake. His smiling face and upbeat attitude reached us all at Little Toad Lake Campground for many years. He added fun and laughter to all the events. We feel blessed to call him friend and feel fortunate to have had one more visit with him before he left this world too soon. The one comfort is knowing how happy he was in his last couple of years being ‘retired at the lake’ and able to travel to see family and surprise Deb with an anniversary trip to Cancun! He even gave us a one man concert at the lake recently with his new music technology he was so excited to share. We will miss him very much and our hearts are with Deb and all of his family at this time. “The Heidens”

I am so honored to have been a part of passing down this music influence from Mr. Wald to my children. Thank you Mr. Wald and to his family for your support and love to him.

    Dearest Deb and family,
I was totally “numb” when I heard the recent news of Tom’s recent passing! He was “so full of life and joy and made everyone around him feel good!!”
He could walk into a room and the whole mood would change and for the better……. He had the knack of reading people and helping students succeed at whatever they did, be it music or life skills. The world will be a less joyous place without my friend “Tommy Boy”….but heaven is in good hands with Tom leading them in good humor and a caring heart!!!!
I will really miss you Tommy!!! You meant a lot to a LOT of people……..
God needed you and we will never forget you………..Prayers and Blessings Friend!

Death always gets to me on a personal level having my own parents pass so early So when I see another pass too soon, it tears at my heart as I relive all those questions, emotions and anger I had when my parents passed. One thing that brings peace is that he lived his life to the fullest. He was at a job he was passionate about, he took pride in and was able to touch so many people that he probably didn’t even realize. Going to choir and listening to the band play was a highlight in my high school career. My passion for all kinds of music goes back to those days. Deepest prayers are with you all.

  139. Bridgeport CTI was fortunate enough to have Mr. Wald as my teacher in jr high and choir. My love of music grew as a result and is still an important part of my life 25 years later. Best wishes to his family and friends.

I hope that we can all remember the good memories we have of Mr. Wald and that they help us through this difficult time. There is sweet music being playing in heaven!

A sad day indeed. In the year after I graduated high school from CCHS, my own father died of a heart attack. As Mr. Wald was a true teacher and wanted to see his students take what they learned out into the world, he joined again with me and another student to help me prepare quickly to sing for my father’s funeral. He didn’t have to, but he did. It meant so much to me. That was over 15 years ago. What an inspiration to so many, every day. RIP, Mr. Wald.
