Joe Laney, age 93, resident of Fargo, ND formerly of Verona, ND, died Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the Ecumen Evergreens of Moorhead under the care of Hospice. Joseph Richard Laney was born December, 17, 1923, at the home of his parents, Abe and Louise Laney on their farm, two miles north of Verona. He attended Greenville Country School #2, rural Verona, then attended Verona High School, graduating in 1940. He attended Interstate Business College and was employed by J.I.Case Company, Fargo. He enlisted in the Army Corps in 1943, took his basic training at Amarillo Air Force Base, TX. He served at the Air Force bases at Clovis AF Base, Clovis, NM, and Harvard, NE, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged at the deployment center at Camp McCoy, WI, in 1946. He married Marjorie E. Weinandt on June 4, 1947. She died October 6, 2012. He farmed until 1957; and was appointed County Auditor. He served in that capacity until 1988. He served as President of the ND State Auditor’s Association in 1977. He was Clerk of the Verona Public School District for 18 years and was secretary for the LaMoure County Water Resource Board for nine years. He was a member of Gilbert C. Grafton American Legion Post #2, Fargo and the Jones Benoit American Legion Post, Verona for a total of 67 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6570, of the Nativity Catholic Church, Fargo. He is survived by five daughters, Valerie Fogel, Dr. Mary Laney, both of Fountain Hills, AZ; Marlene (Tim) Dufault, Crookston, MN; Rebecca (Steven) Peterson, Hannaford, ND; Jill (Todd) York, Delano, MN; six sons, Mark (Charlene), Dallas (Kathy), Raymond (Elizabeth), all of Fargo; Paul (Jackie) and Tim, Sioux Falls, SD; Joel (Joyce), Oakes, ND; one sister, Anna McCraw, Memphis, TN; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Cathy Iverson; parents, Abe and Louise Laney; son-in-law, Glenn Fogel; his brothers, Leonard, Francis, Elmer, Robert, Howard and Vincent; his sisters, Bernadette Campbell, Bernice Dietrich, Lucille Barta and Leah Isley; grandson, Gary Joseph Wagner; and great-grandson, Isaac Stokka. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 14, 2017 at Nativity Catholic Church, Fargo. Burial will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, Verona, ND.   4. My deepest sympathy for your loss. I have fond memories of visiting everyone at the farm and riding in the horse drawn cart. I had a nice visit with your parents at mom’s funeral.

  5. I remember Joe as a guy with a smile on his face all the time. I still remember as a kid talking to Joe about things. I thought it was great that he had time for children.

    Remember Joe is in a better place now.
