Alice Elizabeth (Thompson) Burckhard, 99, of Fargo, died on December 8th at Bethany on 42nd.
Alice was born in Warwick, ND, on February 5, 1915, to John and Amelia Thompson. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1933, where she was an outstanding girls’ basketball player and developed her life long passion for the sport. On June 4, l938, she married the love of her life, Anton (Tony) Burckhard, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, and they were married for 65 years until his death in 2004. While in Devils Lake, Alice worked for many years at Mann’s Department Store, and upon moving to Fargo in 1962, she worked at Monson’s Luggage until her retirement in 1976. She loved baking, especially fruit pies; traveling to Arizona each winter, as well as trips on a tankful with her niece, Candis; penny ante poker; and always having a pot of coffee or a stiff drink ready day or night for friends or relatives whenever they dropped by her home. In 2007 she moved to Bethany Towers, Fargo, and then to Bethany on 42nd last February.
She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Alan (Patricia) Burckhard, Glendale, AZ; two grandchildren, Jerrod (Beth) Shermoen, International Falls, MN and Kristopher (Tammy)Burckhard, Mesa, AZ; three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Shermoen, Maria Shermoen, and Kameron Burckhard; son-in-law, Jerry Shermoen, International Falls, MN, and numerous nieces and nephews, especially Candis (Harley) Sommerfeld, Fargo, and Diane Young, Jamestown.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Toni Marie Shermoen; her parents; all 12 brothers and sisters; and one grandchild, Jeffrey Alan Shermoen.
Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Bethany on 42nd.
