Avis Gjervold

avis gjervold
Avis Pauline Iverson Gjervold passed away peacefully on December 24, 2017. Avis was born to Ingvald and Christine (Wickum) Iverson on December 10, 1920 in Doyon, North Dakota. She moved to Kensal where she lived prior to moving to Fargo with her family. Avis attended Clara Barton, Woodrow Wilson and Agassiz schools and graduated from Fargo Central in 1938. Avis went on to graduate from NDSU with a degree in Home Economics in 1942. She briefly taught in Buffalo, ND before accepting a teaching position in Grafton, where she worked for two years. Avis met her future husband, Arden Gjervold, while traveling with a friend. Arden and Avis were married in Shawnee, Ok on December 24, 1944. Avis finished teaching in Grafton, and then moved to South Weymouth, MA where Arden was stationed and flew blimps for the Naval Air Force during World War II. Arden was transferred to Alameda, CA where he flew missions in both blimps and transport planes. In 1945, when Arden was discharged from the Navy, they returned to Fargo and bought the Hasty Tasty Restaurant near St Luke’s Hospital (now Sanford) which they operated for approximately a year. After selling the restaurant they owned and operated Gjervold Motor Company until Arden’s death in 1991. Avis is survived by two children, Rick (Karen) Gjervold, Fargo and Ann (Ron) Mikalis of Vacaville, CA. and 5 grandchildren, Colin and Aric Gjervold and Kelsey, Brian and Steven Mikalis. Plus, all her wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 9, 2018 at 11:00 am, First Lutheran Church in Fargo.
