Bernice Koering Christianson, age 93, died Thursday, June 16 at the Hillsboro Medical Center Long Term Care.

Bernice Koering Christianson was born in Stanwood, Iowa on August 30, 1917 to Minnie and Henry Koering. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Hillsboro, ND.

She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1934 and received her teaching certificate from Mayville State Teachers College and Valley City State Teachers College. She taught school in Wimbledon, ND and Crosby, ND.

In high school and in her teaching career she was deeply involved in music.

She married Clifford E. Christianson on October 29, 1941 while he was serving in the US Army. in 1945, they established a home in Crosby, ND where she enjoyed serving as piano accompanist for many occasions.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, various church circles, Progressive Study Club, Luther League advisor, accompanist for the Concordia Church Choir and partner with her husband in their Coast to Coast Hardware Store, first in Stanley, ND and then in Crosby, ND.

In 1972 they moved to Mesa, AZ where she again enjoyed playing piano for many social functions.

In 2001 she moved back to Hillsboro, ND and resided at Kelleher Manor. In 2009 she became a resident of Hillsboro Medical Center Long Term Care.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby, St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ. and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.

She is survived by two sons, three grandchildren and two sisters - son Doug and wife Cherry of Arlington, TX; Dan and wife Carol of Hillsboro, ND; granddaughter Sadie of Hopkins, MN; grandsons Eric and wife Danielle of Richmond, CA and Scott of Ft. Worth, TX, sisters Eloise Koering of Fargo, ND and Irene Peters of Van Nuys, CA.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford in 1996, four brothers, Herman, Irving, Walter, Robert  and two sisters, Millie and Velma.

Memorials may be given to the Hillsboro Medical Center Foundation.

    I am sorry to hear of the loss of Bernice. I remember fondly the many visits. She made the best carmel rolls I have ever had. Bernice was kind and always quick to smile and laff. A very dear person.

    SURPRISED TO READ ABOUT YOUR MOTHER’S PASSING. I WAS IN HILLSBORO OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND STOPPED AT THE NURSING HOME. SHE AN BEULAH WERE VISITING IN THE LUNCHROOM SO I STOPPED TO SAY HELLO. YOU KNOW HOW SHE ENJOYED COMPANY AND SHE LOVED TO VISIT.

    SHE WAS SPECIAL IN MANY WAYS. I AM GLAD I HAD A CHANCE TO KNOW HER WHILE MY MOTHER, GEN WAS LIVING AT KELLIHER MANOR. SHE KEPT AN EYE ON MOTHER AND KEPT ME INFORMED AS TO HER WELL BEING IF ASKED.
