Bernice Grossman

bernice grossman
Bernice Grossman, 89, Fergus Falls, MN, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at the Broen Memorial Home, where she had resided since August. Bernice Evelyn Larson was born to Edward and Bertha Larson on April 28, 1915, near Dalton, MN. She attended school at District 7 and after completing the eighth grade went to help neighboring families in their homes. At the age of 18, Bernice went to Ada, MN, to work for her cousin at Skaurud?s Funeral Home (currently Fredrikson Funeral Home). It was there in Ada where she met Arby Grossman. On June 21, 1937, Bernice and Arby were married in Sisseton, SD. They resided in Ada until 1942 when they moved to Fergus Falls. From 1947 to 1965 Bernice worked at Sears Roebuck & Company in Fergus Falls, some of those years serving as its manager. She had a great work ethic and found early retirement unfulfilling, so later worked at O?Mearas Department Store and Rosenblatts. Bernice loved to travel. She was always ready to pack her suitcase and venture out. She traveled extensively - covering 47 states and five continents - yet she?d be the first to tell you Norway was her favorite place. Bernice was often found volunteering at Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she had been a member for over 60 years. Whatever life handed her, Bernice held fast to her faith in her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a charter member of the 51-year-old JUGs (Just Us Girls) homemaker?s group. She loved being with her family, and at family gatherings loved a game of cards and taking home some extra pennies. Needlework brought peaceful moments as did the daily crossword puzzle. She is survived by her only child, Sonia (Pat) McManus of Richville, MN; a sister, Eleanore (LeRoy) Brown of Fergus Falls; four grandchildren, Maureen (Craig) Leesman of Champlin, MN, Greg of Farmington, NM, Ryan of Fargo, ND, and Patrick (Andrea) of Poughkeepsie, NY; and three great grandsons, Connor and Quinn McManus, and Andrew Leesman. Surviving extended family members include sisters-in-law, Anna Grossman and Bernice Larson, both of Ada; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bertha Larson; her husband, Arby (in 1999); one sister, Alice Bredehoft; and three brothers, Chester, Leonard, and Lester. God bless the memory of Bernice Grossman. The funeral for Bernice will be held at 12 noon on Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday. She will be laid to rest in Bethlehem Cemetery in Fergus Falls.
