After graduating from Hillsboro High School she was employed in the office of Tiegland Sign Company in Fargo. She met the love of her life, Halger, on a double date and that led to their marriage on June 30, 1940 by Reverend A.J. Tjornham in their parsonage. They moved to their farm in Herberg Township, Traill County where they farmed and raised their family until retirement.

Halger and Bertha enjoyed entertaining friends and family and in the summertime (when time from farming allowed) there would be a few days spent at the lakes and on scenic trips. There was always time for sporting events, fairs and community functions. Halger and Bertha spent part of their winter months in Palm Springs for 12 years and the later years in Scottsdale, AZ with their daughter, husband, and family enjoying the gatherings of relatives and friends and golfing. In 1980 they retired from farming and moved to Fargo where they became members of Olivet Lutheran Church. Bertha was a temporary salesperson for 18 years in several different children’s stores.
