Dolores Ebert

Dolores Ann Ebert, 89, Hillsboro, ND, formerly Fargo, ND, passed on December 25, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit surrounded by her family.
Dolores was born May 20, 1924 in Barnesville, MN to Paul and Julia Fankhanel. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1942. She graduated from NDSU in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught in Lancaster, MN, Frazee, MN, Barnesville, MN, and Oakes, ND. Dolores married Clarence Ebert on June 25, 1950. They made their homes in Barnesville, MN, Oakes, ND, and Fargo, ND. Dolores moved into the Hillsboro Nursing Home in March 2011.
She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo and Elizabeth Circle. Her three grandsons, Scott, Tom and Kirby were her pride and joy and she loved telling you all about them. She enjoyed sewing and later in life made and donated hundreds of baby quilts to various organizations as well as dish towels for friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy, Frazee, MN; son, Paul (Rosemary), Fargo, ND; grandsons, Scott (Ally) Ebert, Iowa City, IA, Tom (Kristi) Ebert, Homestead, FL, and Kirby Ebert, Fargo, ND; great-grandson, Reid Beckett Ebert born November 26, 2013, Iowa City, IA; sister, Lois Fankhanel, Mandan, ND; and brother, Butch (Sue) Fankhanel, Sun City, AZ.
Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Ebert; parents, Paul and Julia Fankhanel; and brothers, Buster and James Fankhanel.
Memorials are preferred to the Ebert Scholarship Fund, c/o Barnesville High School, Barnesville, MN.

I would have to echo Bonnie’s comments on here…only I never got an “A”…more like a well-deserved “C”. 🙂 Many times over the years, I have remembered Mrs. Ebert. Sadly, at the time I didn’t appreciate the importance of her lessons and usually I was her antagonist. I cannot believe the fabric didn’t unravel completely for as many seams as she ripped out of the flannel pajamas I was trying to sew! But when I have sewn kids’ costumes for halloween or the Renaissance Fest, I have thought of her…and the patience she had to have had to deal with students like me! Blessings to her family… and know that she did leave a lasting footprint!

I enjoyed getting to know Dolores at Elim Lutheran church where we were in Elizabeth Circle together. She was always fun to visit with and so proud of all of her family. When she wasn.t able to come to circle anymore and I would visit her you never left without a dishtowel and she made many blankets for our mission layettes. God’s blessing and my sympathy to all her family.

Mrs Ebert was one of my favorite teachers at Oakes High school. Often wandered where she went when they left Oakes. She taught me a great deal.
Glendive MTPaul and family, My thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time. I know how you feel as my mom passed away a year ago. Mrs. Ebert was a great teacher, mentor and friend. I still use some of the recipes and lifeskills she taught in Home Ec. over 40 years ago. Your family and my family moved to Oakes the same time in 1969 and Mrs. Ebert helped me get adjusted to a new environment-from Rhode Island to North Dakota
was quite a change! I treasure my special dishtowels she gave us for our wedding, they are thin but still my favorites. Mrs. Ebert was so proud and loved her family so much, her face beamed when she talked about you. I pray that the memories you have of your sweet mother help heal your hearts. Rest in Peace Mrs. Ebert.

I have many fond memories of Mrs Ebert from her years at a Oakes High School. As students we often tested her patience. She would calmly question us…such as the time I made blue spritz cookies…they really didn’t look very good….I can hear her asking if I thought blue was an appetizing color….of course I said yes. I was a terrible seamstress…worst in our class…picked the easiest pattern & was the last one done with my sleeveless sundress. She questioned whether the side slits should go that high…of course not, but I was too lazy to change it. She said she loved it…I got an undeserved A.
As an adult I realize all of the wonderfully valuable things she taught us! I sew costumes for a local theater group, I run a restaurant, even manage to cook & bake, have remodeled buildings, refinished & upholstered furniture, made a family budget….raised 4 kids…still sort my colors from my whites…. All drawing from things she taught me in home ec. Thank you, Mrs Ebert…you have enriched many lives.
I wish that I would have told her in person…I haven’t seen her since 1983.
Rest in Peace knowing you have made so many lives better!

Mrs. Ebert was such a great teacher in so many ways-not just in Home Ec but in overall lifeskills. I still use some of the recipes and sewing techniques she taught me 44 years ago. Your family and our family moved to Oakes in 1969 and she helped me adjust to rural living. I still use the special dishtowels she gave me each time I visited, they are worn thin but they are my favorites. Mrs. Ebert loved and was so proud of her family. Dolores was such an important lady in my life. Anybody who came to the Ebert home went home with a dishtowel that Dolores made. Although very worn, I still have some of those which Dolores made over 45 years ago! I was very fortunate to have Dolores help me with my 4-H projects and home economics in Barnesville High School. She taught me so much about sewing and cooking. Our family and Dolores, Clarence & Paul shared many meals together. I remember Dolores offering my father a choice of two different pies, he couldn’t make up his mind so she gave him a piece of both! I cannot say enough about the Ebert’s, they will always remain close to my heart.

WyMy sympathy to you all. She was a friend for many years as two home economists we got along well and did enjoy her dinners when the Wallum’s came to visit. My sympathy to Lois. She and I worked together in the md ’60’s when I was at CCEC.
